repairing synthetic rubber

There are many types of synthetic rubber.  Without knowing the specific type, you can’t know how to glue it.

I’ve got a pair of synthetic rubber duck boots, and one of them has a split at a stress point in the upper (not the sole). I’d rather repair than replace them, if possible. I’ve tried a lot of approaches, including a repair kit for bicycle tubes. But nothing lasts. Any suggestions? Thanks.

I’m in the tire business; 36 years. Tires and tubes are made with synthetic rubber. We used to have a fellow come into the shop who ran a boys’ club. He had several pairs of waders for duck hunting and trout fishing. The kids were pretty hard on the waders. They were always poking holes in them. We use Rema brand tire repair materials. The "red edge" tube patches worked great for us. Always use the same brand cement and patch. Find a good tire shop and ask what brand materials they use. Cleaning your gun??

Question:

I’m relatively new to hunting, (second year) I just got my first "new" shotgun, a Benelli nova camo. I love it. My question is, should you be cleaning your gun after every hunt or skeet shoot or do u do it every so often? Also what do u use to clean it? And should you get it cleaned by a professional once a year or so? Ive hear that "gun scrubber" is good to use? Clean your barrel with a swab after each use.  Lightly oil the outside metal parts after each use.  This should take approximately 2 minutes of your time.  It’s part of the hunt. Clean the rest of the gun according to your manufacturers recommendations. The manual that came with it is good reading (I assume you bought it new…if not, order a manual from the manufacturer…they are usually free). Follow the step by step instructions the first couple times you do it. After that, it will be like second hat. I disassembled my AL391 last week and was amazed at the amount of crud in the action from duck hunting.  It still worked.  I simply forgot to do the end of season cleaning.  It did not rust.  Amazing, huh? I do use gun scrubber at the end of the season and do a real good cleaning of any gun at season end. But during the season I just run a cotton rag down the barrel that has been sprayed with silcon oil and then a dry rag. I do know that if you have been out in the rain or snow it best to clean it. Just do not put away wet. I even had in my backpack a piece of 1/8 rope tied to a old piece of cotton so that I could run it down the barrel to get it dry befor I would put  the gun  in the case. I have gun over 30 years old that the barrels look like new and these guns have been used not only put on the wall…. San Antonio Texas Hunting

For ducks/geese, you can go to the coast on either side of Corpus Christi. For doves, you should get one of the $40 Annual Permits from TPWD. For deer, you’re not going to be happy.  It’s not "near" SA, but you might look at the Big Bend National Park.  You can also come to east Texas to the National Forests there.  Otherwise, plan on getting a lease. — + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + Chris Barnes                              AOL IM:  CNBarnes Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at:         http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/

You’re not going to like this. There is no free hunting near SA. 99.9% of the land is private. What you do is get a lease for deer or dove. Go towards Houston to go duck hunting, and a guide. For "free" hunting go to East Texas to hunt on US Forest land. Be sure to take a armored vest if you do and keep your head down. Hunting in Texas is different from other states. Question:

Ok, well I got it.  Or rather, I’m picking it up on the way home from the office.  Believe me when I say it is NUTHIN’ FANCY!!!  But the guy threw in a good trolling motor, all I need is a battery & charger…all for $150. Bet I can clean it up and turn around and sell it for $250 or more. It’s dirty, dusty, and needs a real good scrubbing.  I wonder – is there some sort of caulking, like clear silicone, that I can run in the seams? Kind of as a precautionary measure?  Or is that overkill?  Would it "stick?" Is there any kind of… hmm, I guess the word is "conditioner" I can use on it?  Car wax or something?  You know, aluminum gets that "haze" on it.  Or can it be painted? **sigh**  Guess I know what I’ll be doing this weekend….! Y’all should have seen the look on my kid’s face when I picked him up from after-school care.  And the other kids were saying "Hey, Tommy’s got a boat!"   Those are great suggestions… the most difficult part to take care of will be.. well, the guy’s 14 year old kid slobbered fiberglass bondo all over it. If there was even a scratch, the kid bondo’d it.  Didn’t knock the dirt off first, either, so it’s all pulling away.  And I’ve got to get that stuff off, and deep-clean it.  Once that’s done, I’ll flip it over and get it half-full of water to make sure there are no leaks, even tho’ I was assured there weren’t any.  Then it’s off to the store for some silicone.  Ah – and let’s not forget the battery and charger for the trolling motor!  To give you an idea of how old the motor is, it’s made by Shakespeare.  Do they still make motors, or have they quit making them?  I know they make fishing equipment, but…! The thing is, here in TX, no matter what size the boat, if it has a motor (including a trolling motor) it has to be registered.  The guy I bought it from had it on a ranch tank since God was a child, and never registered it.  I wonder if I can take it out on the lake while waiting on the paperwork? Oh, and date is Friday night… I don’t know about the coffee, but I sure like those waffle cones! Happy trails, Cynthia

Hi Cynthia, I don’t know about Texas, but here in Wisconsin, as long as you have the carbon copy of the registration form, that’s good enough for our wardens. It’s a good idea to have a photocopy of the check you sent with the registration also.  Check with your fish and game people to make sure though. If you do find any leaks, you might try a good two-part expoxy to stop them. Make sure you mark the leaks when you see them with a permanent marker or something. Let the area dry really good, then apply the epoxy liberally.

Hello Cynthia, clean out the boat with soap and water, (the car wash idea was a good one).  Then if, you are just filling in cracks or spaces you want to fill, take lacquer thinner and a rag, put some on it, and use it to break down any grease, oil, or other things that will prevent the silicon from sticking.  Do this outdoors in an open area, as the fumes are not good for you.   Then seal the crack with the silicon caulk.  Work it in with your finger, but not very hard or much pressure, just to make a good surface seal is all you are trying to accomplish.  If you leave a little bead above the surface it is ok. I have purchased a few used RV’s and this is the best way to seal around all the windows and other skin penetrations, and it lasts a long time.  Hope this helps.  Monty

jet skiers

Question:

I have had jet ski’s come in the area I was fishing and try "spraying" me with water.  Sometimes coming within 10-15 foot of me.  I got to where I would carry a pocket full of 3/16 oz egg sinkers, when they came at me, I let them fly.  I have also been guilty of tossing a superspook over them and let it hang about 6 ft above their heads then pull back before it falls. This usually gets their attention.  Problem is that these "kids" have not been raised on the water, there for they have no respect for their surroundings or others sharing the water in which brings them enjoyment. — Keep a tight line MoBassfisherman http://members.cland.net/~cburks *One thing becomes clearer as one gets older and one’s fishing experiences increases, and that is the paramount importance of one’s fishing companions.

Question:

Don’t know a lot about jon boats, even though I have fished from quite a few that belowed to someone else.  But, if you are planning to also use it for shrimping, I would suggests you would want something with a good platform at the bow and stern and one wide enough to give you a stable platform. And if you plan to take it in tidal water, you would be well advised to contact a marina in the Charleston/Savannah area for advice.  A lot of fresh water gear, including boats, motors and trolling motors, don’t do well in salt water!  And I think you might want to consider getting a slightly larger motor as tidal currents can be quite strong. — Go fishing. black powder duck hunting

Question:

Hi All, Is anybody in this newsgroup shooting ducks with black powder? I am curious about giving it a try and wondered if anyone has had any particular success or failure with particular ducks/loads/guns, etc… I would love to hear from other duck hunters around the Raleigh NC area. Thanks. BTW – what in the hell is wrong with people in NC these days? I see threads about people stealing tree stands, ATVs, and anything else not nailed down. I also noticed in a recent small game outing to my favorite lake that one particular point that was heavily hunted by the same group through the season was thoroughly trashed. Propane cylinders, old boots, wire, camo net, trash, and three or four cases of empty shell hulls. This is public game lands that is privately owned and could be closed to hunting. I have hunted ducks with a TC 12 gauge New Englander shotgun (single shot).  I load it with 1 1/8 oz of steel shot over 110 grains of ffg.  I shoot over decoys so my shots are close as a rule.  I can olny spank one at a time and it is a real challenge in the rain (Washington State) but it is a real hoot let me tell ya.  Actually, the way black powder ignites (and all the physics and stuff) are different than modern.  The patterns are more dense and uniform allowing a pretty much open choke.  There are less "Holes" in the pattern.  If you are thinking of buying a gun, consider buying a double barrell so you can shoot skeet too.  Shoot’n doubles with a single shot will challenge your reloading speed! i recommend using a modified or better yet improved cyl. with steel as it shoots a tighter pattern. a full will shoot too tight a pattern. as for size, i have found #2 or 1s to be best when hunting flooded rice fields. 4s are just too light with steel although in the ole glory days of lead this was the way to go. also steel is much faster than lead and lighter so it does not travel as far but gets there faster. that is why a largershot size is essential b/c steel does not have the density thus lacks the penetrating knock down power of lead. so rule of thumb-larger shot, wider choke.
