What's the best 3" 12 GA sabot slug for deer?

Question:

Though I have a 3" A-bolt, the slug that works best (for me) is the 2-3/4" Winchester-BRI Sabot. Good shooting, Randy Wakeman Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at:         http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/

I shoot a Remington Wingmaster Magnum pump and I use Brenneke slugs in the smooth bore barrel with smooth bore choke tube and use Remington CopperClad sabots with a rifled choke tube. All 3” and 12 ga. Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at:         http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/

Interesting.  I use the 2-3/4" Remington sabots in my 1187 and am so satisfied with the results out to 100 yards that I wouldn’t consider trying anything else.  I did speak to another hunter who used the same sabots and said he tried the 3" sabots and couldn’t get as tight a pattern as he did with the 2-3/4. hello fellow hunter,         HOW ARE YA?  MY NAME IS TOBY AND I AM FROM WICHITA FALLS TEXAS. I SAW YOUR BULLETIN ABOUT THE SLUGS AND HAD TO WRITE.  I SHOOT A MOSSBERG TWELVE GAUGE AND I WAS LIKE YOU SHOOTING 2 3/4.  I SWITCHED TO 3" SLUGS AND ENDED UP WITH A GROUP THE SIZE OF A SOFTBALL.  I AM VERY SATISFIED WITH MY SHELLS.  THEY ARE THE COPPER SOLIDS 3".  I TRIED EVERYTHING ELSE AND NOTHING PERFORMED LIKE THE COPPER SOLID DID.  WELL GUESS I’LL GO NOW.  HOPE TO TALK O YOU LATER                                        SINCERELY TOBY Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at:         http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/

I dont know about 3" but I have been using 2 3/4" bri sabot slugs for years, have taken 4 deer with them, ( 4 slugs), slug always went in one side and out the other, never lost a deer and a deer never went more than 50 yards. I think winchester owns the brand now, my point with the "in one side and out the other is" why do I need any more power than these 2 3/4" slugs have?  Good blood trails when you got a hole on each side leaking. Expansion is not needed when 12 gauge slug hunting, these bri sabot slugs are hard lead, nothing better! Tim

Only your shotgun barrel knows.  Buy a 5-pack of each brand you like and try them at the range to see what shoots best.  If you find several that shoot an acceptable pattern, then you can choose based on terminal balistics, i.e. what they’ll do to the deer. samg Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at:         http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/

The best sabot slug to use is the one that shoots best in your shotgun. Even if it does not expand and goes through the deer, that is still a .50 caliber hole through the deer! Do what I am doing. Buy a box of every kind of saboted slug you can find and shoot groups from the bench. Let us know what you find. I’ll do the same when I’m finished.         – - – - Illegitimi Non Carborundum Est – - – - THOSE who trade essential liberty for a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.      Benjamin Franklin Bad officials are the ones elected by good citizens who do not vote.       George Jean Nathan Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at:         http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/
