What slugs are best in an unrifled shotgun?
Question:
I bought a Mossberg 500 for home defense and some hunting (turkeys this fall; I don’t think the birds are in much danger). I’d like to fire some slugs, out of curiousity. What are the proper slugs to use in the unrifled, fixed choke long barrle that comes with that gun? Sabot are fro rifled barrels, right? -jeff Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at: http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/

Rifled slugs. Sometimes referred to as Foster-type slugs. There are many good brands to choose from including Remington, Winchester, Brenneke. and some others. Buy a box of each and shoot some paper. See which ones give the best groups from your gun. I have heard that #1 buckshot is best for home defense. > Sabot are fro rifled barrels, right?

IMHO, it’s a tossup for the short rifled choke tube. Then again, you’ll need to shoot various different brands to find out which brand likes you particular barrel the best. samg Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at: http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/

Any rifled slug will work in your gun. You may have to try diferent brands to find which group the best. Every gun seems to be a little different. Sabots are not worth the extra money to shoot in an unrifled barrel. Good luck Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at: http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/
