Shawn Graham asks: Can someone explain the Gauge Measurement to me? I understand that a 10 is larger than 12 but why?  And how does this measurement apply to other areas like electrical wiring, Plastic sheet thickness?  Is a gauge a particular # of MM? Shotgun gauge is equal to the number of spherical lead balls, the diameter of the bore, that it would take to make one pound of lead: a 10 gauge would equate to 10 spherical lead balls of that diameter, a 12 gauge would equate to 12 lead balls, etc.  The exception is the .410 which, if correctly referred to, is called bore instead of gauge. That is not exactly how it goes.  It should be this, "A guage is how many lead balls the diameter of the barrel is would equal a pound." So for a 12 guage, it would take 12 balls with diameters equal to the inner diameter of the barrel to equal a pound.  And I’m not really sure if it’s lead or steel balls, but you get the picture. >believe it or not, guage came about by someone saying "if I took a pound of >lead and made 12 equal sized balls out of that one pound, the diameter of one >of those balls would be a 12 guage. >Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at: >        http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/
