30-30 lever action. Nothing else is even close. Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at: http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/

For sporting purposes, that may be a good guess. But talk to a game warden. You will find out the the 22 LR has taken many more deer than the venerable 30-30 has ever killed. The poachers like to shoot the deer at night in the eye socket and kill them that way, very quiet and very effective. Not sure about it but I’s guess the 30-30 — OK! Lever action 30-30. The 30-06 may be a distant (way in the distance) second, but might even fall to third behind the .32 WinSpl — A question debated and left unanswered is better than a question answered without debate. This one will bring a few responses. I suspect the 30-30 would rank high because of its long term popularity and affordability over the years. Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at: http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/

If I had to guess, I would pick the 3 most popular cartidges in the US. That would the 30-30, the 30-06, or the 270 Win.

Speer Reloading manual says the 44-40 cartridge has this distinction as taking the most game in North America (I’d have to drag it out and look, but they mention deer). No one keeps records, so it’s really an opinion thing, not a factual thing. .22 LR would be my guess. I have a friend with a farm in western Maryland, says he kills a dozen or more deer a season with a .22 (suppressed, so as not to surprise anyone, much less the deer), I’m sure he’s not the only one. NONE of his deer makes it to a DNR station. -nb

Discounting the poachers with their .22 long rifles, my guess would be the .3O-3O Winchester followed by the .3O-O6. The odd thing is that with the .243 Win., .25-O6 Rem, .3O8 Win., .27O Win, 7 mm Rem. Magnum, and other superior cartridges, it that the inferior .3O-3O still holds on to this record on white tail deer. Steve H — http://www.bigfoot.com/~S_C_Horn Before you buy. How would the 30-30 figures compare to 12ga slug? I was just thinking about how many states allow only shotguns with slugs.

Not comparable. The shotgun is far, far, more powerful, but slower moving and thus comes to ground faster. Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at: http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/

Gravity is a constant and things fall at relatively the same rate, when they have relatively the same air resistance makeup. (I am not a physics expert but what I mean is don’t compare a large area light weight object like a parachute to a small area heavy object, like a bowling ball.) Since bullets have roughly the same shape and are made out of very similar materials in weight. Lead copper etc. The rate that they fall will be similar but the speed comes into play by determining the distance they cover before hitting the ground. Unless someone has been keeping track of the guns or cartridges used to kill every deer shot in every State since 1787, let alone since 1895, I suspect the stock answer – ".30/30" – is an article of faith rather than anything approaching fact. Given the areas with very large populations of whitetails – at least in those areas east of the Mississippi – I would guess it to be the 12 ga shotgun with slugs. In states like New York, which has a very large deer population, the 12 gauge shotgun is used to kill more deer each year than all rifle calibers combined, for the simple reason that rifles are not allowed in most of the deer management units with the highest deer populations. Not an article of faith. What other big game round has been so popular for well over 100 years. Look at the number of sales or the gun. It is effective and inexpensive. Of course it accounts for far less than 50% of all kills, but the other kills are distributed among dozens of current and dozens of former rifle rounds, plus shotguns, and now heavy pistols. I don’t think so. I would say in years gone by it would have been the 30 30 but alot of deer have been taken in the last 10-20 years by the 30 06 and the 270.There are more deer now in this country than there have ever been. I think a Ford chambered in F-150 has to rank up there pretty high.
The .30-30 has to be near the top, but only if you are counting back more than 50 years. If you are counting the last 20 years alone, I would think that the .30-06 may have an edge based on the sheer number of guns made by the vast number of manufacturers in that chambering. Almost every bolt, auto, pump, or single shot rifle made has a model chambered in .30-06. As mentioned by another poster, the 12 guage shotgun should also rank highly. Many localities in the U.S. do not allow rifles and 12 guage slugs are king in these areas. DuckHunt Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at: http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/

Where did you get this from??? It has been my observation that very few localities require shotgun, typically sections of NY, all of NJ, and most of Penn, and the areas immediately adjacent to major metropolitan areas. An area equal to about 5% of the total land area of the US. While the slug may be the ammo of choice in these areas, I do not believe that it is even in the top 15. ..P Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at: http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/

I would like to know what was the most prevalent firearm at this time too. Maybe even a 16 gauge or even a smaller guage was more popular due to the fact that it was more economical to use these smaller bores in the days of black powder and lead.
