WARNING:Advice for new slug/shotgunners

Question:

I was sighting in a new scope over the weekend shooting slugs w/ my 12ga. Let’s just say I got a bit too close to the scope (probably because I’m used to shooting .22’s) and the recoil drilled the scope right into my forehead and left a nice big gash. I thought I’d give my "words of wisdom" to people out there who are just picking up their shotgun to shoot slugs w/ a scope. I can’t wait to get out again, but I’ll always remember that day. Hope this prevents someone else from doing the same thing… Share what you know. Learn what you don’t. Another one to avoid is shooting sabot slugs through a chrony.  I destroyed my buddies when the hard plastic sabot hit the chrony and destroyed it.  Good laugh but pretty expensive.  Would guess that saboted muzzle loader slugs would do the same thing. Chris, Sorry about the gash you took from your scope.  You might want to check your scope to see if it is set for enough eye relief so that it wont come back and get you again the next time you shoot it. LOL I’ve done that too, but if you think thats bad try a scope gash from a 7mm Weatherby Mag. OUCH Arlee Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at:         http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/

Not to diminish your pain, but a 12 ga. shotgun with 1 1/4 oz. slugs has about 10 1/2 more foot pounds of recoil than your 7mm Weatherby.  More also than a 300 Weatherby, but only slightly.  Bottom line, make sure your scope eye relief is set properly. Remember to HOLD on to the gun.    If you don’t the scope will get you. Don’t be afraid of the scope or the gun.  If you are the scope will get you. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – > I was sighting in a new scope over the weekend shooting slugs w/ my > 12ga. ‘Thats exactly what I did,but did it this way.  Aim,aim, aim, oh my god this going to hurt, shoot.  I thought that a rubber scope ring would do the job, but it did’nt do any thing but add more of a kick to the pain.  I found out that if you hold the gun tight to your shoulder and hold it tight with your off triger hand, it might not hit you between the eyes.  I also had it hit me while in the tree stand and did’nt realise it until I felt something cold running down my face and put my hand up and found that it was all red.  Good luck  Herb — Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at:         http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/
