Consider the AKC hunt test program for pointing dogs. It is different from the field trials in one important respect: Dogs are judged against a standard and not one another. The objective of the hunt test program is to evaluate the dogs natural hunting ability. There are 3 rankings Junior Hunter: Dogs must show a natural bird finding ability and trainibility. A dog must find birds and hold point long enough for the handler to get within "shotgun range". At this stage handlers use blank guns and no birds are shot for the dogs. Senior Hunter. Dogs must also Retrieve and Back their bracemate. Gunners are present on the course and shoot birds for the dogs. Master Hunter. A dog must do all that a senior dog will do but without handler commands. Soft "encouragement" is permitted. Where are you located? There might be a club in your area. Regards, Alan Alan K.
