Turkeys and clay pigeons…
Question:
I’m looking for a shotgun that will function both as a good turkey gun and as a decent (starter) clay pigeon gun. I’m hoping to enjoy shooting clay pigeons so much that I’ll end up getting a nice pair of SKB over/unders for my wife and me at a later date, but for now I just want to have something that will function as both. Hopefully that same gun will be adequate as a turkey gun for many years to come. Today I looked a quite a few guns at a large local gun shop and managed to narrow my choices down. I want a something in 12 gauge, semi-auto, 26-28" barrel that will handle at least 3" shells, and I want it in either black synthetic or cammo. I found that the Browning Gold Hunter fit me well and went for $660, but I also liked the Mossberg 9200 for just $370. Both have black synthetic stocks, 28" barrels and 3" chambers. The clerk at the gunshop said the Mossberg might not handle the lighter loads prefered for shooting clays, but that the Browning would be OK. Some questions… Is a 3" chamber enough for turkey, or do I need 3.5"? What chokes will I need for both turkey and clay pigeons? Has anyone used the Mossberg 9200 for shooting clay pigeons? Turkey? Any other comments or suggestions would be appreciated, too. Thanks in advance. — Richard Joseph RJ Software – Producer of ClockWise Get ClockWise at: http://www.RJSoftware.com/ Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at: http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/
