Tree stand theft???
Question:
Recently, I’ve read alot of posts concerning this very subject. And I too have to acknowledge that it happens here in Massachusetts too. Once in awhile someone will steal your stand, but my problem went beyond that!! Last years shotgun season, I went to my stand at 5:00 am and waited for light. I hunted until 8:00, because I had to go get the kids to school. Upon returning to my stand at 8:30, I noticed someone sitting in it!!! Ok..1st I thought it must be a friend, seeing that we hunt on private land. But when he didn’t wave to me, I started to question myself. So I tell him to stand up and left the seat and NOTICE MY NAME ENGRAVED on the bottom!! He shrugges me off.. I then ask him who gave him permission to hunt there..again the cold shoulder!!! So I decided to go ask my buddy who’s father owns the land.. He says that NO ONE ELSE is supposed to be there..and that he’d go back and check it out with me.. Upon returning to the tree..the hunter was long gone.. But my stand was fine….or was it… It seemed that this low life individual had taken it upon himself to smear chocolate all over my stand…spill soda or juice on it…and either spill alot of coverscent or just urinated himself!! I was totally disgusted!! I try to keep everything scent free and always respect the property of ohters..but why would someone do this??? There’s enough room out there for everyone..and enough deer for everyone too.. So I guess, that the LAZY or just IGNORANT others must just be ticked off at those of us , who have the luck!! They don’t want to do the hours of preperation..but want to reap our rewards!! Well I guarantee you, I will remember that face!! And God forbid that poor person sitting in the tree the next time!!! There’s enough people fighting against us all..so why are we fighting each other??????? Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at: http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/

I was talking to a local farmer who has land near mine. He has one individual who we both know that lives nearby that has been caught trespassing on his land 3 times already. This individual has been asked repeatedly to stop hunting on the farmers private property. The farmer finally found and removed the individuals stand that he left in one of the farmers trees. This guy actually had the balls to come over to the farmers house and demand his stand back. This is the type of so called hunter the locals have to deal with in our area. They don’t give a damn who owns the property. They think they have some god given right to hunt anywhere they see fit. This attitude is what is killing landowners willingness to let anyone on their property anymore. I don’t know any of the local farmers that would allow someone on their property if they were to drive up and ask. These lawless individuals are killing the ability of those who follow the rules to find places to hunt! Jim C. These are the slob hunters. They are the ones who bring shame on the true hunter sportsman. They are thieves who will knowingly tresspass, violate game laws and have little or no consideration for the rights of others. In all probability these same individuals will lie, cheat or steal in any or all other aspects of their lives. hmmm seeing as how in Texas a land owner just might have the right to protect his property with deadly force and seeing as how this so called hunter was armed, the land owner could have considered him dangerous and shot him. is this what is going to happen from actions like the described? where land owners have to start shooting trespassers? did the land owner have no trespassing signs posted where they were clearly visable? did he report this person to his local LEO? I would have given him his stand back but it would have been in little bitty pieces. Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at: http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/

You’re right about the slob hunters (actually they are poachers or trespassers, ie. criminals) but if we as legitimate, law abiding hunters do not turn them in at every opportunity, we are as guilty as they are. We must write down descriptions, license numbers, dates, and any other details and turn this over to law enforcement. (DO NOT ATTEMPT TO PERSUE OR RESTRAIN ANYBODY! It can be dangerous.) If you just turn it over to the landowner, chances are he will not do anything. This is not because he doesn’t care, but because "…I have to live with my neighbors." Once the criminals develop a pattern that the judge can see, they begin losing their trucks, guns, hunting rights, etc. – - – - Illegitimi Non Carborundum Est – - – - THOSE who trade essential liberty for a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.
