Steel Shotgun shells
Question:
Please can someone tell me what type of steel shotgun shells they are using and why? I feel that Federal shells are the best. I use 3inch #2. How come it is so hard to get Federal shells out here in California.

– This past season I used 12 ga. Winchester Super X, and Federal. 3" mag, #4 and #2 shot for both brands. As for which brand is better I saw no difference (the federals had faster shot by looking at the box). The only difference I saw was that I harvested more birds with #4 shot (all ducks) don’t ask me why (probably because there is more shot in #4’s). What I bought was based mainly on availability and price. Tom’s hunting page: http://www.pioneernet.net/kellyntom/tom2.htm

I prefer Federal also but their sales force must stink. Last year I asked a store is they would special order Federals for me and they said o.k. in case lots. You might try that. I like to shoot Remington Duplex shotgun shells. They seem to pattern well out of my 870 Wingmaster. The Duplex comes as a mixture of various shot sizes ex. BBX2, 2X4 etc. Generally, where I waterfowl hunt you could have a bunch of Snow’s over you one minute & teal buzzing the decoys the next. IMHO the Duplex allows you to be prepared to shoot at various types of birds without changing the shell’s in your gun. Also, the pellets are black, whereas my buddies shoot copper coated shot. I’ve had to pay for more than one lunch because a cleaned bird had copper coated shot in it rather than black pellets
