I’d also like to mention the 16 gauge.  It is not as popular and therefore cheaper.  Shells are still out there and I find my Ithaca SxS in 16 choked Skeet 1 and Skeet 2 to do a mighty fine job on PA ruffed grouse.         SSSsssshhhhhhh!! Don’t tell all those Northerners! First thing you know, they’ll be just as expensive up there as they’ve remained in the South!         Next thing you know, the price of bismuth’ll come down, and they’ll find out about that — and then the 20 will be obsolete ….         Hhhmmmmm — those old hills do keep getting taller & steeper every year. And a person might find an old obsolete 20, even lighter than a 16, and maybe going cheap …         On second thought, yes, go ahead and tell them. Just hold off long enough for me to get one more 16 first!  :-) RR "Beartooth" Neuswanger, PhD, NRA-E   Work is for people rrne (at) loc.gov                       who can’t hunt.                    I speak for me. Scott You wanted to know about SxS shotguns for quail. You’ve made a good choice. In my opinion, for quick snap shooting, nothing beats a light side by side. The between the hands response, and broad profile lets you get on target quickly. As far as geting one for a reasonable sum, that takes some doing. I currently own 2, a Parker VH in 20, 26" and a Merkel, model 8 in 12 with 28"…and 3" chambers, choked skeet and IC, the  perfect duck gun for steel. Both are worth about 1200, the same price as a medium good o/u like a citori. As far as finding one, you will  need to look for used guns. Your 2 best sources are Spanish and Italian guns and older American guns. the only problem is that 20s are more than 12s so I would consider a light 12 and just shoot 7/8 loads. In the Spanish, I would look at Sarasqueta, AyA, Arrieta (higher) and older Grullas (they went under another name that I forgot,  but if I rember I’ll  post and if you can find it you might get a 2,000 gun for 500. In Italian, check out Bernadelli’s boxlocks. Also lower grade versions of American guns like parkers and Smiths can be had for not much cash. Below are a few dealers. I’d get a copy of Shooting Sportsman and Double gun Journal and work the adds, with a few weeks  of calling you should be able to do very well for 1,000-1200. Chaddicks (mostly US guns) (972) 563-7577 Lewis Drake (a bit higher end) (502) 436-5270 Griffin and Howe (ditto) (908) 766-2287 Game Fair (615) 353-0602 Wingshooting adventures (Arrieta, a bit pricey but very good) (616) 677-1980 Colonial (have SKBs ugly but good) (919) 732-8396 Quality Arms (281 870-8377) New England Arms (207) 439-0593 Also try the Orvis, and Cabelas gun rooms, availble through their catalogs. Have you patterned this gun with steel?  I’ll wager that it isn’t nearly as tight as it needs to be. I’ve always heard "IC steel = Full lead" but when patterning my GTI, I discovered that using Steel #2, I need approximately the same choke as with lead #2.  Don Zutz had an article a few months ago in Shotgun Sports on this very subject and got the same results. -Scot — ***ANTI-SPAM ALERT***  Note the "removethis." in the return address.                        You know what to do. You might wish to consider a Browning BSS . . . an extremely well made SxS. Best regards, Randy Wakeman Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at:         http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/ To leave the Hunting listserv list, send a message with SIGNOFF HUNTING
