Had to use a bit of sandpaper on the forestock too. Have with almost all my rifle though except for a very nice Belgian piece.  JK> I occasionally use mine for a little light varmint hunting, so I’d say  JK> the accuracy is as good or better than I am. I’ve papered mine at half moa groups with Hornaday 140 BTSP at near max V. Have found it a bit finicky about what it likes (Hornaday 110 HP’s pattern like a shotgun) for note though: when I talked with the Ruger folks about a question on it they asked how it patterned. When I told them capable of .5 moa with the right loads they told me "never sell it, you got one of the really good ones. BTW: tell me if you ever do want to sell it…." On average, the M77’s hold a tighter group is what they said. Also, mine’s an early 80’s gun (‘82 maybe ? that’s was a few years and alot of miles ago…).  JK> Weight…well…it’s best used as a blind gun vs. a walkabout gun – 9lbs is alot after the 1st hr ! (8 lbs of rifle + 1 lbs of scope) I’ve tramped around with it many a mile and have found I’d just flat prefer something in the 5 to 6 lbs range. Nothing beats it though when it’s time to sit for a few hours and hit ‘em in the head at 300+ yds (I know, I know, the round will do heart/lung shots just fine but I *always* prefer head shots. Smaller target, but it’s either a miss or time to start field dressing) let’s see, some of the orig Q were:  > 1)How strong and long lasting is the action?  I have looked at some older  > Rugers and the block lever has a lot of play in it. still rock solid 14 or so yrs later. you’d have to really overload the gun to cause a problem from what I have seen. I would ask if the play is in the functional part of the action or if it might be just a worn pin that the block lever rotates on. If someone left the action open and dropped the rifle or subjected it to abuse (bounced around a truck, etc.) you could get a loose lever but not  loose action.  > 2)How much of an advantage is the 26" barrel, and is this an accurate  > hunting rifle? adv of 26" barrel. Over a 24", negligable. Over 20 or 22", it starts showing significantly (same as Jay said IOW) accuracy: as I said, mine does .5 moa loaded right. Don’t know how it would handle factory loads, it has never been fired with any. See note above on what Ruger folks said about accuracy though.  > 3)Is this gun too heavy for carrying very long distances? just about any gun is, ya’ just gotta live with it sometimes. #1’s are a bit worse because of the higher weight (about 2-3 lbs more than alot of others). It can be alleviated alot by having the proper sling for the combo of the gun, your shoulder geometry and what clothing you’ll be wearing. I’ve had a #1 in .270 for years (pre warning – don’tcha know) and I’ve never had any trouble with it.  The forearm needed relieving out of the box, but that’s not unusual for a factory gun.  As far as the 26 inch barrel goes, I suppose it would give you a couple a hundred more FPS as opposed to a 24 inch one.  No big deal, really.  If compared to a 20 inch barrel, it starts to get significant. I occasionally use mine for a little light varmint hunting, so I’d say the accuracy is as good or better than I am.  Weight…well…it’s been my experience that most guns are entirely too heavy to carry for very long distances, and the #1 is no exception.  I just don’t understand how an eight pound rifle can weigh 40 or 50 pounds after I’ve carried it a few hours.  And it doesn’t seem to matter if those hours take me to the top of a mountain or in the bottom of a valley, it still weighs too much.  I guess it’s kind of like the paradox of the thermos…it keeps hot things hot, and cold things cold…..but how do it know the difference?!?!
