I generally spend about 3 hours a week at the range. Shooting rifle and pistol in small and large bore. With the exceptions of the regular "gun nuts" like myself most of the folks I see at the range are only there to sight their rifles for a hunt. It still amazes me the guys that seem almost ecstatic at keeping a 5 shot group in the 10 ring at 100 yards. It reminds me of an article I read years ago. It was written buy a guide that basically listed the reasons guides go gray. 1. The hunter hasn’t spent enough time with their rifle to know it characteristics and be accurate. 2. The hunter cannot estimate range, and can’t judge for elevation. (the article was written in the early 70s. Before everyone had a laser range finder) 3. The hunter didn’t check his zero. The zero at sea level at 65 degrees might just be different at 4500 ft. and  38 degrees. Plus the bumps and bangs of transport. 4. The hunter was overgunned and afraid of the recoil. Don’t hunt with a rifle, take most of my deer under thirty yards, fling arrows all year round. Shotgun , I shoot from Aug. to Feb. and occasionally the other months. I shoot atleast 50rds of .22, just to keep in practice every month, as they say practice makes prefect, and our quarry deserves nothing else from us!, Just lost my deer rifle as the stalking ground was sold…….but I will still keep up with the practicing! I hunt (deer) with a handgun and I make a point of getting to a range at least 6 times a month. The only reason I will miss one of those sessions is because I have enough of a weekend off to be able to go up to my property to practice or because I am going to some sort of handgun match. Shooting a handgun match is just as important as any session on a range. But, you are right. There are way to many people who do not do any practice until the last minute. These are the same type who will take their rifle in to the gunsmith a week before opening to get a new scope put on or some major repair done that they have known about since last season.   They need a little proper instruction. ; )   I rarely shoot rifles (I like shotguns a lot more), but I was on the rifle team in high school ten years ago, and learned proper shooting techniques. In the last ten years, I’ve probably shot a rifle fewer than ten times, but knowing the techniques helps tremendously.  The last time we went shooting (last week), I set some soda cans at about 75 yards, and picked up the .22 rifle we bought for $25 on a reservation.  The thing has a 12-year old Tasco scope off of an old pellet gun, and the scope was about 8 inches to the right of the point of impact, and I still got the four cans with six rounds.   If you learn the right techniques, it helps tremendously. steve — Domain for replies is "codon" Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at:         http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/

Not nearly enough anymore.  But, just cause you "shamed" me into it, I unlimbered a couple of my favorites: 10/22, 7-08, .308 and ‘06 last weekend and spent a wonderful day telling my sons just how bad my eyesight has gotten over the past decade. But, I’m comfortable with my shooting at 100 yds.  Not as good as I used to be (too much coffee, too many cigars, and not enuff exercise) but I can still put every round w/in an inch of where I’m aiming once the scopes get dialed in right. My shotgun work, on the other hand,….dove have nothing to fear.  I swear I bought a case of 7and a halfs that had NO shot in them. Only trouble I had was new scope kept sliding in mounts when I shot it. (30.06) Finally got it tight enough to stay. Maybe I’ll use locktite next time. Our season starts in 3 days. Saw 2 nice bucks the other day, still in velvet. — Doug
