Remington 788 in 222 cal

Question:

Hello, have found the above in one of the local shops.  Looks well used but not used up.  Has some wear on the blueing, looks like someone tried to redo the stock.  Tasco 3×9 TV scope mounted.  Owner wants $259.00 for it.  My questions how does this caliber shoot?  Accurate for varmints? At what distances?  Would it be a good shooter for the wife and kids at the range?  How about the price?  Any and all suggestions and advice appreciated in advance. A .222 will do everything a .223 will (except shoot 69 grain match slugs). Women and children (and more men than care to admit it) will find such rifle a joy to shoot.  If the bore is perfect and you don’t mind handloading the price isn’t bad.  788 wood was nothing special to begin with.  You can re-refinish it if an ugliness has been perpetrated upon it.  Try offering him $200 and be okay with $225.  You may find you want a better scope eventually. If I were you Al I would buy it! I got one of these off of the used gun rack at a local shop (mine was 150) simply becuase the stock was cracked. I have since restocked it. >  My questions how does this caliber shoot?

It was specifically designed to be a bench rest cartridge so it is extremely accurate. > Accurate for varmints?

I can shoot the brass part of a spend high brass shotgun shell at 75 yards consistently. >At what distances?

I have shot ground hogs at 200+ yards with it. It will shoot out to 250 – 300 if the wind is not too bad. > Would it be a good shooter for the wife and kids at the range?

Excellent! very little recoil and really accurate. > How about the price?

Anytime I see a 788 under 300 (espically with a scope) I buy it. I am telling you you will not be sorry. >Any and all suggestions and advice

Either buy the damn thing or give me a name and phone number so I can buy it! Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at:         http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/

Go for it! you will love it. Very accurate, and very mild recoil. Not much louder than .22 rimfire so kids and wife will like it. Price very fair, as I saw 788s at last weeks gun show in Lexington, KY  priced as high as $395.00. They are becoming rare, so don’t let it get by you. Invest in a better scope, and you will have a shooter you won’t sell. Ed in Ky Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at:         http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/

The 222 cal is great for everything you mentioned. I own a 223 and love it for plincking and varmit hunting. Its good out to about 250 yds but after that it falls off pretty quick.   The model 788 on the other hand is the one I have doubts about! My first 223 was a model 788 and I had problems with it ejecting the shells  I could never figure out what caused it, but the shell wouldn’t fly out of the reciever likit was supposed to and would lay in the magizine not allowing me to lever another round into he chamber. Other than that it shot extremely accurate. I finally got rid of it because I was never to Remington actions any way, especially the 788 with its back locking lugs ! My sister owns oe in a 243 and she has never mentioned any probablems.   Price isn’t bad but I would work on lowering it ! These are great turkey guns for those areas not restricted to shotgun. Have used it on jackrabbits out to 175 yds. Recoil is next to nothing. My wife and kids enjoy shooting it and a .257 Roberts more than any other calibers, including .223 Rem and 6MM Rem. Very accurate with handloads. Price is in the ballpark. Most 788’s in Central Texas are priced $250 and up without glass. Dwayne Potter Austin, TX Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at:         http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/

Their popularity is very regional.  Here in the south, they are popular but a "mint" condition one will bring no more than $300.  Saw at least three at the Biloxi show this weekend, and not one was priced over $250. At the end of the show, all of them remained un-sold Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at:         http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/
