"Generally" speaking, unless a shotgun barrel is screw-choked or specifically said to be "steel shot compatible," you shoot steel at your own risk. Also, older "modified" chokes can have MUCH more constriction than current offerings. Some folks think that firearms last forever- but they don’t. The same perception would not apply to PC’s, VCR’s, or an automobile. You are lucky that nobody was hurt, and (though you do not mention the year of mfg.) it is foolish to shoot anything other than bismuth or tungsten polymer loads through a gun unless you absolutely know for a fact that steel is okay BEFORE you shoot. The lawsuit you are referring to was about the particular grade of steel Remington used in their 12 gauge barrels ONLY. It had nothing to do with steel shot. My advice would be to take their offer, as a new barrel costs around $175 or so. You could try to get them to give it to you, but it might take an attorney to do that and that would cost you even more, unless you are one or related to one. You could sue Remington on this IF you or anyone around you were injured. Part of the settlement stated that personal injury claims could be filed whether you participated in the class action settlement or not. Well I put 2 Remington 2 3/4in #2s through the gun, then 3 #3 Fiocchi’s, guess what happens after 2nd #2, the barrel splits at the muzzle. Spoke to Remington head office today and told my story to the lad in Products and Services, well seing that I have a American address in Hogansburg NY he told me to send the barrel along with $50 for replacement barrel. Once I told him my story, the gun is a 2 3/4 with modified choke, he said that should not have ever happened with factory loads. My question is should I be going after a barrel at no cost, the service rep said because it was an older gun that he didn’t think the barrel warranty was good.
