Question on a used shotgun….
Question:
Today at a gun show, I saw a Sears M300 (Winchester 1400 20-gauge autoloader, for a very nice price. My girlfriend and I have been looking long and hard for the best inexpensive 20-gauge we can find, and this seems like a nice gun for her to start with. The gun seems to function well, with minimal discoloration, and just a few tiny spots of rust. The barrel has obviously been brushed extensively before. My questions are… 1. How is the track record of the Winchester 1400? 2. Will the obvious heavy brushing of the barrel affect the patterns? 3. How well does the adjustable choke on the end work? Thanks in advance…. steve — Domain for replies is "codon" Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at: http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/

The Model 300/1400 is a decent little gun. I have one myself, also in 20ga. It is a decent gun, fairly reliable, does not like cheap dirty ammo such as the $3.00 a box winchester loads at walmart right now and will become a jam o matic if the cheap stuff is used. No problems when using AA’s or other quality loads The marks in the barrel are not caused by brushing, but are probaly one of several things: 1 pitting from powder residue sitting for a long time. while the powder shouldn’t have been corrosive, it will attract moisture and that will leave corrosion marks. 2. Plastic residue from shotgun wads. This will come out with a good cleaning. A proper gun brush just isn’t hard enough to significantly scratch a barrel even when scrubbed vigorously. The poly choke type device works well and my gun patterns decently. These are not expensive guns. Book value is around $210 last I checked and that is for a very clean model. I paid less than that for mine 3 months ago. Hope this helps. Arch Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at: http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/
