Product liability

Question:

I heard one of the families involved in Colorado school shooting was about to name a gun manufacturer in a suit. As has been the case with some city governments, they are citing reckless marketing practices as the violation. Would it not follow, that the US be included as a violator for condoning such practices if they are in fact malicious? How far would these (pardon the pug) shotgun approaches to litigation go if the Feds were named. The attorneys will sue whoever they think they can get a dollar from. It does not matter if the suit is settled out of court so long as they get their $$$.  If this keeps up, we may find our favorite hunting guns going out the window also.  Unfortunately, hunters are killed in hunting accidents every year, and people are lawsuit happy.  More and more manufacturers (of all goods) have to spend big bucks defending themselves on frivolous liability suits – remember the hot coffee at McDonalds?  At a certain point the costs in these suits will cause some manufacturers to stop producing certain products (Colt?). — The original point and click interface was a Smith & Wesson.
