Pistol Grip on a Shotgun

Question:

" have read some posts about how hard a shotgun was to handle with pistol grips.  I can see the forward grip causing a twist, but how about a pistol grip much as an AR-15?  I don’t know if this is an entire new stock or if you can convert a regular pump Mossberg.  Any comment?" Let me preface my comment by saying that I don’t claim to be a world class wing-shooter, however I do bring home the occasional bird.  With that said, I have been shooting all manner of shotguns for nearly forty years, both with and without pistol grips.  I personally prefer the more-or-less standard pistol grip such as comes on the Mossberg pump Bill mentioned.  I have shot with the English-style straight-grip stocks and can’t see that it did anything for me.  I personally can’t imagine an aberration such as an AR-15 style pistol grip on a hunting gun.  However, to each his own.  Everything I have ever read or seen from the so-called experts suggests that how you mount your shotgun governs how you shoot it, not the style of pistol grip or lack of one. It sounds like the original poster might have been talking about a pistol grip on the forward slide grip (aka "riot gun"), not the difference between what "shotgunners" call the semi-pistol grip or the English straight grip of the buttstock. I’d love to see somone at the clays range with the tac shotgun!!>?< J. Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at:         http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/

We had a fella show up to a clay shoot in Inuvik, NWT with a street sweeper that had a pistol grip only and a standard forearm. He tried to convince us that he had enough control with the sling. When he turned around (when somebody called him) and swept the spectators with the muzzle he was booted off the range right quick. There’s no telling some people. If I had been the range officer he wouldn’t have been allowed to take it out of the case. I’ve been wondering if a thumbhole stock would improve my shooting since my right wrist doesn’t allow me to properly grip a conventional stock. well I guess I’m one of those rebels who just won’t listen.  Mainly because the contest in this area are lame, and the contestants are piss poor and think using a .22 at a pistol match is ok.  I’ve used my  HK Super 90 M3 with Pistol grip and got 2nd at one shoot in GA.  I pot lucked at a pistol comp in Houston, and I had a .44 DE and my partner had a Styer Pistol (don’t remember the model, buts it’s on the Assualt ban bill), and we got plenty a laughs by the spectators and other competitors.  They all shut up when we made the finals, and placed 5 overal.  Beaten by 2 groups with .22, a team whith .38 super, and a .38 special, and the other team with a .45 and .22. I say get out and have fun.  Who cares if you get last.  Shooting can be about fun. >We had a fella show up to a clay shoot in Inuvik, NWT with a street >sweeper that had a pistol grip only and a standard forearm.
