Need help choosing single shot slug gun.

Question:

>I want to buy a fully rifled single shot slug gun for deer season, >whether it be a 12 or 20 gauge.  Which gauge would be better in this >case.  I’m looking at the New England Tracker II rifled slug gun.  Has >anyone used this gun or know anyone that has used this particular >shotgun, how is it.  I’m wondering how this gun shoots, i.e. accuracy. >If this gun isn’t a very good one, does anyone out there have any >suggestions.  I’m looking to spend less than $200.  Is this possible, >I would think it would be, because a rifled slug pump is aroung $300.

I have this gun and used it for the first time this season.  As far as accuracy is concerned, I have no complaints out to 100 yards.  Mine seems to shoot best with slugs vs sabots but I would suggest trying both types yourself.  The down side to this gun is the weight.  If you are doing a lot of walking when you hunt, you will feel it.  The up side vs a pump (I used to hunt with my Rem 870), is that the recoil is significantly less.  I have not had the opportunity to shoot it at a deer yet, but on the range, I find it to be very accurate and less punishing to shoot. BTW – Walmart, here in MD, had them for $169.  The going price in gun shops was about $199. i have the nef 12g fully rifled slug gun w/ iron sights – it seems fine – I use it for bad real bad weather to save on nicer guns. I have run shot thru it but didn’t care for it’s performance on that. $75 used. If I was going to invest in just one gun i’d look at the Mossberg 500 w/ a bird barrel (removeable chokes), and a slug barrel. They even make a muzzleloader barrel for it. There is also a youth stock available – so you can pass it on. If the Tracker II is the 12 ga with the really thick barrel (same external contour as their 10 ga barrels) the one article I read on it gave it high marks for accuracy and regarded it as a excellent value. — Michael Brady Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at:         http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/ To leave the Hunting listserv list, send a message with SIGNOFF HUNTING
