I need to know "How to efficiently kill downed birds" (esp. ducks)
Question:
>"How to efficiently kill downed birds"
As an old hunter and having mercifully dispatched a number of birds, mostly pheasants, I do this :: Grasp the pheasant with the right hand right where the wings meet the body. It feels like there is a soft spot there. Squeeze as hard as you can cutting off blood supply, air, nervous system etc. They just seem to go to sleep without a lot of movement. I was taught this by a game guard eons ago and believe it is the most humane method judging from the movements of the bird. It works equally well on quail, partridge etc. I have no experience on waterfowl. Ouch! I wouldn’t do that to any shotgun of mine. Be aware that blood can cause a barrel to rust very quickly. And of course, a loaded shotgun isn’t to be fooled around with either – someone may well get shot sooner or later. –Jonathan Jonathan Spencer — forensic firearms examiner Keith Borer Consultants Mountjoy Research Centre, Durham, England, DH1 3UR tel: +44 191 386 6107 fax: +44 191 383 0686 Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at: http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/ To leave the Hunting listserv list, send a message with SIGNOFF HUNTING

Hi All… I was wondering how to kill downed birds after you have retrieved them from the field? I have had the experience of downed birds being alive with just a broken wing or a couple pellets hitting them. Any suggestions on how to quickly put them out… Thanks for the replys, Jay Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at: http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/ To leave the Hunting listserv list, send a message with SIGNOFF HUNTING

Put your thumb under the back of their neck at the base of their skull with your index finger under their beak, quickly snap the head backward while pressing with your thumb, breaking their neck. It works instantly. Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at: http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/ To leave the Hunting listserv list, send a message with SIGNOFF HUNTING

Another method or two. Carry a fisherman’s ‘priest’ (this is a short piece of steel rod fashioned so that it swells out to a round hammer head at one end) and administer the ‘last rights’ to the back of the bird’s head. Alternatively, hold the bird by the body and swing it so that it’s head is struck against a stone or tree trunck. Blunt force trauma is very effective and doesn’t lead to damaging the bird’s neck, which you need if you’re going to hang the bird by its neck. –Jonathan Jonathan Spencer — forensic firearms examiner Keith Borer Consultants Mountjoy Research Centre, Durham, England, DH1 3UR tel: +44 191 386 6107 fax: +44 191 383 0686 Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at: http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/ To leave the Hunting listserv list, send a message with SIGNOFF HUNTING
