Hunting in NH

Question:

I just received some hunting info for NH, maps, fees, schedules etc. I will be staying in Stratham. Can anyone fill me in on some good places to hunt in the southern part of NH??? There is a WMA call Bellamy north of Portsmouth but I’d like to hear from folks who have been there…and done that..in New Hampshire, of course. I live about 10 miles from Stratham and have lived here all my life so I can probably help you.Ive shot a lot of deer in this area with bow ,muzzleloader and gun so lets see what we can do for you.  First forget the WMA areas there arent many in NH and you dont even need to consider them as still most of our land is not posted. If you are from NJ you will be suprised how much land is not posted against hunting.  Acually Stratham is a good place to hunt itself.  There were 11 bucks and 10 does killed in that town last year 1.38 kill per square mile.  Exeter the next town to it had 28 bucks and 14 does 2.15 per sq.  mile.  I want you to know that you are not going to see deer like you do in NJ or Penn. But you can shoot a buck or a doe the deer are healthy and ther are some very nice bucks around.I believe I just read that the average buck in NH dresses out at 165.  There are a few things I need to know before I can get specific on locations for you.Parts of southern NH are shotgun only.  If you want to hunt with a rifle or a shotgun that will make a real difference. The immediate Stratham area is all shotgun but you only have to go a short distance to get in the rifle areas.Let me know your preference.  Also would like to know what type of woods you like to hunt, small wood lots, swamps, farms,or big woods.  I dont know when you will be here but if you have a muzzleloader that is THE time to hunt.It is before the regular gun season, the pressure is light on the deer, they arent spooked, and the weather is usually nice. The real deer hunters take their vacation to hunt then.  If you can get back to me Ill be glad to help you out.
