Gun Choice

The truth is, all these calibers are functionally interchangeable. (NOTE: They do not interchange to shoot in different rifles. I’m talking about exterior ballistics here.) If you don’t believe me, check the ballistics tables. There is very little real world difference between them. They are all perfectly suitable for use on deer. They are all marginal on elk, although will kill elk if you wait for a good shot. If one of them would have an edge on elk, it would be the .30-06 with 180 grain premium bullets such as the Nosler Partition. Ideally, you would use something like a .300 Win. Mag. or .338 Win. Mag for elk. Many experienced elk hunters maintain that the .338 Win. Mag. is the perfect rifle for elk. The good news is that it will kill a deer as well! Perhaps the way to go would be the .300 Win. Mag. It is a good elk rifle and can be used for deer as well. As to the best deer and elk rifle.  The .270 is a little light on elk, the .30-06 is a little heavy on deer, and if you shoot a deer with a 7mm all you’ll have left is some jerky meat.  I suggest you either get a .308 or .300.  Both great guns. Since you include elk, i would suggest either the 7mm Mag or the .30-06. They’re actually quite similar in over all power, the Big 7 launching a lighter bullet faster.      This being said, if the quarry is trophy once-in-a-lifetime bull elk, i would preferr something along the lines of, say an 8mm Mag or .338 Mag.  These cartridges generate more recoil then i would care to put up with while hunting deer.  If you are only going to have one rifle, make it a 7mm Mag, .30-06, or perhaps one pf the .300 mags – whichever you like best – and learn to shoot it well!  Good hunting                                                -Zimmy Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at:         http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/

My choice would be the .30-06.  Loads available for anything in North America. and .30-06 is available at any store that sells ammo.  The others might not be so abailable in an out of the way place. I take it that you mean the 7mm RM, and not other 7mm calibres ? All of them would be a good choice for the hunting you describe. However, if you’re not reloading yourself, you probably will have more joy with the 30-06, as you can get cheaper ammo for practice, and have more to choose between, when selecting ammo for hunting. If you don’t like much recoil, the .270win would be the best choice. If you’d like good ballistics, the .270win would again be the best choice. If you’d like as much energy as possible, the 7mmRM would be the better choice. However, the .30-06 still stands as a very sensible copromise… Also, you can "adjust" for recoil when selecting a rifle – and especially it’s stock. The heavier the rifle and straighter the stock – the less recoil. Also, some stocks "take up" more recoil than others. >JB
