Cartridge for coyote
Question:
Yes .22lr is way to weak. A .223 or a 22-250 is perfect. A larger cal. is ok if you don’t want the hide. Eric Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at: http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/

..22lr works if you get a good shot. The Aquila 60gr .22 subsonics work pretty good off the tractor while mowing hay but a semi auto shotgun would be better. For uncertain shots I find my .243 with Federal’s varmint load using an 85 grain Speer "TNT" bullet. The bullet fragments on impact and tears the coyote’s inside to shreds, no exit wound. > The .22 LR is a bit light. .22-250 is fine for longer range work. A bit > sharp on the ears though. The .22-250 is a lot better than a .22 LR for coyotes. You have to be awful close to a coyote ( which is a hard place to get ) to make clean kills with a ..22 LR I always use my deer rifle on coyotes, a .308 If they get hit anywhere important by a 180 or 150 grain bullet there dead. Steve H I hunt coyotes year round…all 99% with a .243 using Nosler 70 grain Ballistic tips..get great accuracy..long range to 5 feet…with excellent knockdown. Have not lost a dog yet. The .22 LR will kill anything with a perfect, close range shot. But I don’t recommend it for anything as large as a coyote. They’re pretty tenacious. Any of the centerfires is far better. The 22-250 is an excellent coyote gun. Dick F. Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at: http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/

In general, yup. And nope. Probably a lot of coyotes have died with .22 lr holes in ‘em, but unless there’s something special about your coyote shooting setup, it leaves a lot to be desired. The .22-250 is never too big unless noise is an issue ’cause you’re hunting close to houses. IMHO, good coyote cartridges start with the .222, include everything up through .25-’06, and I’m not shy about uncorking a .300 mag if that’s what I have handy. I wouldn’t go out and buy one for coyote hunting, but I sure wouldn’t stay home if that’s all I had. For hide hunting, the .17 remington is good, and with the right bullets the medium to large .22 centerfires are probably optimal. (I’ve used .17 rem and .223 the most.) I’d stay away from the .22 hornet, .218 bee, and .221 fireball unless range is very short. Get up into the 6mms and coyotes certainly die but the hide can get pretty torn up. I don’t buy the FMJ thing in heavier calibers. First criteria is a clean kill, second is damage to the hide. FMJs, even the big ones, can let a coyote run off too often.
