BP Barrel Boring

Question:

Doesn’t sound like a stupid idea to me, but I’ve only been making my own barrels for about 15 years. I think either a 12 (.729") or 20 (.620) gauge would be feasible. I don’t know what it would cost to have a "professional" do the job; you would need to drill or ream out the rifling and ream to bore size of your choice. Another option would be to buy a smoothbore barrel and have it installed on your  gun; this might be cheaper? Very few muzzle-loading gunsmithing tasks are beyond the abilities of the dedicated hobbiest. good luck.

Mark, it would depend on where the barrel was made, if it’s a safe thing to do……there’s some very soft steel comeing from Spain, etc. If it’s good steel, then as long as the dia. is 1" or more, it could be made into a 12ga.  The problem is, I don’t know who’d do it for you. It is a lead anyway, FWIW. cheers chas
