best gun for 11yo
Question:
I started my 11-year old off this year with a shotgun. Had cost not been an issue, I think that I would have used a Remington or Beretta 20-gauge youth-model gas-operated autoloader. I ended up buying a New England Arms .410 single-shot youth model (22" barrel, 12.5" pull). This was based on the advice of the shooting coach at the Homestead in Hot Springs, Virginia, who always starts shooters on .410. The .410 is, however, in the hands of a beginning shooter, basically a Station 7 gun, and this is how we have used it. New England Arms will provide a second barrel (22" in 20, 28, or 12 Gauge) for $40, including shipping; you have to send the gun to the factory for fitting. I am going to have a 20-gauge barrel installed this summer so that the gun will be ready for hunting this fall. Furthermore, when my younger child comes of age, I will be able to start off on the .410 and move to the 20 gauge. Good Luck. Tom. Response:
I started with a Winchester Ranger YOuth in 20 gauge. It started all three of my younger brothers as well. My Dad would only let us use one shell at a time at first, until we became better shooters and he knew we could be trusted with multiple shots. I would highly recommend the gun.
