.22 Mag for coyotes

Question:

I hunt in Wisconsin, and want to hunt coyotes. The area I hunt will not allow center fire rounds. I have called in a few coyotes, but not within shotgun range. I would like to extend my range on these animals. Is a .22 Mag enough to kill this game at 100 yrds? Any info would be nice. Thanx in advance.  Art Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at:         http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/ To leave the Hunting listserv list, send a message with SIGNOFF HUNTING

double check this with the DNR.  The coyote may be considered a varmit and high powered center fire rifles can be used for varmit.  We hunt fox in Sheboygan county with 22-250’s and 30-06 and we are 80 miles south of the shot gun line (hwy 22) Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at:         http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/ To leave the Hunting listserv list, send a message with SIGNOFF HUNTING

Yes, probably, with careful bullet placement. I would think about using Federal’s 50 grain load.  While it starts slower and drops more, I believe it packs more energy at the 100 yard mark than the 30-40 grain loads. I have a Winchester 9422 mag I use for coyote hunting during Oregon’s elk seasons when you are forbidden to carry a centerfire rifle unless you have an unfilled elk tag.
