Winchester Mod 70

Joe, Didn’t Winchester go back to a claw type extractor (pre 64 style) on some of there newer guns? Winchesters (American Repeating Arms) has a good description of the claw extractor on their wep site. Write to Winchester and include your serial number. They will tell you exactly how old the gun is. Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at:         http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/

Yes that’s correct. And it is why I included the serial number range. A pre-64 M70 has a claw extractor, and so does the currently manufactured "classic M70 action". Of course only the pre-64 will also have a serial number below 570,000 with no letters in the number. joe   "The doorway to all freedoms is framed with muskets"       –from an old NRA ‘junk mail’ solicitation– Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at:         http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/

Hey Joe, you forgot to mention that the new "Classic" actions with the non-rotating claw extractor are superior to the pre-64 actions. ;-) ..P Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at:         http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/

Andy: Two clues for this particular Model 70. First Winchester didn’t chamber the pre-64 in .222 Rem; second, look at the serial #. If it has a G in front, it’s a later model. Send me a partial # and I may be able to date it. But am leaving for 2 wks on Thursday, so if you can’t get back soon, it’ll have to be after that. See if you can find a copy of The Winchester Rifle, by George Madis (sp?). It has some tables showing the date of mfg based upon S/N. There is a boat load of good Winchester info in this book. Andy,  If the bolt has an external extractor, similar to a ‘98 Mauser, it is most likely a pre-64 rifle.  Dan AZ Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at:         http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/

Response:

Winchester never made a M-70 pre-64 in a 222 caliber. Also, all pre-64’s have the long extractor, There is no letter in the serial number. Ken Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at:         http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/

The rig is in good condition and shoots reasonably well with the scope appearing older than the rifle. If it has a claw extractor, like a Mauser 98 and the serial number is below 570,000 it is a pre-64. BTW, there are no letters in the serial number. joe   "The doorway to all freedoms is framed with muskets"       –from an old NRA ‘junk mail’ solicitation– Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at:         http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/

If it’s an older Winchester the way  to tell is by looking a the bolt ,it has a claw that feeds the bullet into the chamber. However Win. recently brought this style back out, so if it looks old & has the claw its a pre 64.
