Winchester doesn't like me asking about triggers

Question:

> Lawyer’s trigger is what you got.  Take it to a gunsmith and have it adjusted. > Else buy a Timney trigger like I did.  No problem.  Good trigger.

Are you kidding?  Their Winchester trigger must be whole lot better than their Remington 700 trigger.   I had one … aweful.   I have a lot better results just using the factory mechanism, dropping in a Holland spring kit, and adjusting the screws.   If I want something good, I pull the unit and ship it to Neil Jones; for less than the cost of a Timney, he’ll set ‘em up for a 1 pound pull.  He does GOOD work.  Makes a real decent setup for live varmints at short to medium range.  When I need better than that, like punching paper or shooting faaaaaaaaar varmints, I’ve taken a liking to Jewell triggers.   Not cheap … 3-4 times as much as a Timney, but at least in the Remington world, they’re more than 3-4 times better so the money is well spent. How adjustable is the Winchester version of the Timney?  What pull weight range? I don’t have a Winchester but that could change … "things" been known to happen.  :-) Tom Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at:         http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/

That’s a "lawyer trigger". If you get it set to 3-4 lbs., then have to send it back to Winchester for some reason, it will come back with the trigger set back at 10 lbs. BTW—-The Winchester trigger is *almost* as easy to adjust as the Remington’s. The trigger spring is tensioned by a little pair of lock nuts on a shaft. Unlock the nuts and back the one next to the spring out until you get the weight you want. Then lock it there with the other nut. The shaft adjusts the amount of contact between the trigger and sear. It’s locked by another nut that jambs against the frame. That  nut is a good one to leave alone.      Bill Van Houten (USA Ret)  "No matter how hard you try, you can’t throw a potato chip very far." If you really care, you’ll keep Jewell busy instead.  His are stainless and better overall. — Randy Howard Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at:         http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/

I believe the original poster was in search of a =decent= trigger. I have several brands, including the Jewell 1.5 oz target trigger on my Rem VS ..223. It =is= a jewel, but I’m happy with the other, less expensive ones on my guns that don’t require that much precision. I have Timney, Canjar and Spec-Tech triggers. They’re on Rugers and Remingtons. Their triggers mostly suck too. :( — Charlie Dilks    Newark, DE  USA Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at:         http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/

Rem model 7 or 700 have adjustible triggers.just be careful that you don’t go too light or they might jar off or be so light you get premature shots. Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at:         http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/

Don, I’m not sure about Winchester’s problem… A suggestion, buy the M70 compact, if you like it… and bring it to a good gunsmith to check the bedding and trigger pull. The gunsmith should be able to adjust the trigger pull and let-off to any "reasonable" poundage you request, making sure the let-off is crisp and consistant. Then he’ll ask you to try it with a box of loads and if your satisfied it’s a simple tap with a punch to keep the set screews from wandering. JMHO, which I’m sure others will recommend too! Paul S. I handled a Winchester M70 compact and was very disappointed in the trigger pull – set at about 10lbs. So I wrote Winchester some email asking them how I can be assured that the rifle I order will have the trigger set correctly (~4lbs). No answer. A week later I asked again. No answer. I know I can get a good trigger in a "rack" gun because I also checked out the Browning microhunter (beautiful single stage trigger). What is Winchester’s problem?
