Winchester BRI sabot slugs:
Question:
I just bought a slug barrel for my 870 pump, and I was wondering if anyone has any good things to say about the Winchester BRI sabot slugs. How do they do on deer? Slim Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at: http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/

Slim, I used BRIs back when they were still BRI. Winchester bought them out. The problems I had with them is the "hourglass" shape would break in two pieces. Not everytime, but enough to be a concern. How I found out about it was on a first shot at the target I spotted what looked like two holes. So I walked down and sure enough there were two holes in the target, neither one close to the bullseye. When they stayed together they were very accurate. I also had a problem with non-expansion. The exit holes on the deer were about the same size as the entrance holes. The lead seems very hard, so that could be the reason. I’ve switched to Lightfield Hybrids and like them a lot. They are just as accurate, if not more so than the BRIs. Downrange trajectory is great (as much as a 12 guage slug can be). Expansion is is more than adequate. Try them, I think you and your Remington 870 will like them. The Winchester BRI sabot slugs will often shoot well. The problem is that they are so hard, they do not perform well once they hit the deer. They go through without expanding. Try the Winchester Hi-Impact slugs. I have used them for six or seven years and have had very good results with them. – - – - Illegitimi Non Carborundum Est – - – - THOSE who trade essential liberty for a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety. Howdy, Slim- For my money, you can’t go wrong with Rem. Copper Solids! I use the 3" Mags. every year, and have never had a WT go more than 40 yards or so after impact. The thing I like about them is that they show the same FPS as most 1oz. slugs, yet are 1-1/8 oz. That’s knockdown power!
