which Ml?
Question:
Howdy! I’ve decided to pick up an inline muzzle loader. (thanks to all for the black powder advice). The question now is which rifle? I want this to be inexpensive. I am considering the American Knight, the Traditions Buck Hunter Pro, the CVA bolt action and the Cabela’s Timber Ridge, all under $200 in Cabela’s. Any thoughts? The Knight is the only one I’ve handled and it seems solid. It is, however, designed for a 1 in 28" inch twist as opposed to 1 in 32" for the others. Is this a disadvantage with conicals? Is shooting sabots going to create a cleaning nightmare? Can I shoot conicals out of the 1 in 28"? Are all of these guns crap and should I plunk down the cash for the Remington? Are there other factors I should consider? # # Howdy! # # I’ve decided to pick up an inline muzzle loader. (thanks to all for the # black powder advice). The question now is which rifle? I want this to be # inexpensive. My Wolverine has done an excellent job for me. # It is, however, designed for a 1 in 28" inch twist as # opposed to 1 in 32" for the others. Is this a disadvantage with conicals? You shouldn’t have a problem with conicals, but you will have to use a big one. The faster twist requires a longer bullet, which translates to heavier, to get good stabilization. Precision rifle makes a variety of bullet types in 450 grains that shoot quite well from the fast twist. # Is shooting sabots going to create a cleaning nightmare? I shoot sabots in my Wolverine and have no problems with cleaning. I have found that a 275 gr bullet or larger shoots best out of my gun. (That length thing again). I use only Precision Rifle bullets, because I’ve found them to be the best performers on the market. You can get more info on them at www.prbullet.com. I have used a number of their bullets. For all out knockdown power out to 100 yds, use the Keith Nose hollow point. I shot two deer with these bullets and both dropped in their tracks. The buck was shot through both lungs, no bones hit. I found the bullet under the skin on the off side beautifully mushroomed. Last year I used their Flatliner 315 HP. This is a longer range bullet. I had planned to use thier ballistic tip bullet this year, but I’m reconsidering since I’ve been seeing a nice 10pt in an overgrown cornfield. The ballistic tip is better used in wide open areas. I’ll probably switch to the Flatliner or Keith Nose, if I don’t get him with my bow. # Can I shoot conicals # out of the 1 in 28"? Are all of these guns crap and should I plunk down the # cash for the Remington? Are there other factors I should consider? If you prefer conicals, you can shoot them. Regardless of what you choose, you are going to have to work up a load for your gun. As far as going to the higher priced Remington, I’d rather use my Knight, and I’m a die hard Remington man. It all comes down to what you would prefer to use, and what feels good to you. If you run into any problems working up a load, let me know and I’ll do my best to help you out.
