What caliber took your first deer?

Question:

My first deer was shot with a 7mm 08.  My rifle is a Remington Model Seven. Hardly a kid, I was 44 years old at the time, and had been hunting whitetail for only three years.  I shot the buck with one shot, through the heart at about 60 yards.  The bullet was a 140 grain bullet, and this was more than adequate at the distance.  It did damage and break the shoulder as it exited the animal, disturbing some of the meat on that off side.  This has been the only deer I have shot, passing on some bucks the following season that did not present good, clear shots.  I have taken a caribou and a moose since then, with a larger caliber. Response:

First with a rifle was a 3pt whitetail with Marlin 1894 in .44 mag at 150 yards at age 11. Lucky shot clipped the spine on the trotting buck. First was a year earlier (age 10) while squirrel hunting alone. Hunting on logging trails with with chest high grass on both sides I walked into a herd of deer. They scared the heck out of me (Hey, I was 10). When this small doe darted out in the road in front of me at 20 yards I was releived it wasn’t a wolf (Did I mention I was 10?). I decided to burn it good like my Dad frequently did the neighbors trash eathing dog with a .410. I was using a single shot 20 guage with 2 3/4 #4s for squirrel. The broadside shot dropped the doe instantly. Boy was I shocked. Wrong as it may have been, we did indeed bring the deer out. Wasting a deer is worse of a crime than killing one out of season in my opinion. Fortunately with age came wisdom and I can look back on the incident and laugh. Late 80s, first deer was a 4 pointer – well, glorified spike – at 30-40 yds shooting a Winchester 1200 Ranger in 12GA using Winchester 00 buck. Pellets broke his shoulder and perforated heart, lungs, and windpipe. I was very happy about it all, but I don’t like buckshot now – you can’t shoot very far with it. I was 17 (more years ago than I care to think about) when I shot my first whitetail deer, a monstrous (at the time) 7 point buck.  It was taken with a borrowed 8mm German WWII Mauser in full military configuration.  God, that was a heavy beast to lug around the woods. — Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at:         http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/

My first hunt was at age 11, carrying a single shot .410 with slug. Fortunately, I did not get a shot, so I didn’t cripple one.  My next hunt was many years later, and was successful — with a Rem 760 in .30-06.  My first deer was taken with a 30/06, using Federal Classic 165 grain ammunition. I’ll tell you how it transpired. I walk up to some rocky ledges that overlook a small ravine. Looked around for a second and did not see anything. So i sat down and reached for a reeses peanut butter cup when i looked up and saw it. I actually had to wait a minute for it to turn broadside, and when he did WHAM, down he went. I saw the tail flickering on the ground and shot it again. What a riot. He was dead before he hit the ground. Been using the 06 ever since and have had the same results. Pretty much no tracking. It was a 70 pound button buck. 6 pointer, 50 yards, slug from a double barrel 12ga.  Dropped where he stood.  I haven’t seen one in the woods since.  It’s been 14 years since I shot that deer.  As always, maybe next year. — If you can’t run with the Big Dogs, stay on the porch Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at:         http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/

A fifty pound recurve bow.  Well my first deer just appeared out of nowhere, it was about 5:30 and it was just beggining to get dark.  He walked up and looked at me, and kept coming.  I tried to draw my bow and he bolted, right then and there i thought it was over and whispered (loud i guess) SHIT! The deer then turned and came back around.  When his head was behind a tree i drew and he didn’t come out for around 20 seconds.  When he did i loosed my arrow and it got him right in the engine room from 6 yards away.  He jumped 5 steps and later during field dressing we found my broken arrow and broadhead lodged in his heart.  It was great. Took my first last year with a 30-06 150gr HP.  I’m 47.  The same season my 14 year old son took his first whitetail with his 30-06.  It was a good season for us. For him – first day out – we were both in a platform blind at about 12′.  I wanted to coach him through the first chance to shoot.  1/2 hour later two does show up at about 35 yds out.  He takes the first with a perfectly placed shot.  She runs about 15-20 yds and drops solid.  I keep telling him it doesn’t always work that way…… We are in the first part of the muzzleloader season now and are holding out for bucks.
