What caliber????

Question:

I’m considering coyote hunting and would like to know what is a good caliber to use, without creating alot of pelt damage. Also would a .22 magnum take down one of these animals? Tanx in advance Art

Art:         Although I don’t use a .22 magnum, I’ve heard that they work–but only marginally since you can’t control the shooting conditions.  I think that it would be accurate to say that most hunters us a .22 caliber center fire.         Generally, what you’ll want is a bullet that enters the coyote but does not exit.  It’s the exit hole that usually causes the damage.  Unless the bullet you use has such a thin jacket that it rapidly disassembles on contact.  Then you’ll have a large entrance hole.  You’ll likely get a lot of good suggestions on this newsgroup, so I won’t recommend anything specific.         To conclude, however, I’d like state that many rifles will work well. Even your deer rifle.  Hit the coyote through the lungs, and everything should be hunky dory.  But hit any large bones and the secondary fragments (both bullet and bone) can cause a temendous amount of pelt damage.         Read Rick Jamison’s book "Calling Coyotes and other Predators".  And good luck.
