Weatherby (Howa) Vanguard rifles

Question:

Since when is the Vanguard chambered for Weatherby rounds?  I’ve got a .300 Vanguard that I have been hunting with for over 25 years and it’s a .300 win. mag. round.  I shoot Failsafe rounds and have had a muzzle break installed.  The gun has served me well. — John Harvey http://home.att.net/~john.harvey/vfpstuff.htm

The only *Weatherby* round in which it’s available is the .300 Weatherby Magnum.  I bought one this fall. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – > Since when is the Vanguard chambered for Weatherby rounds?  I’ve got a .300 > Vanguard that I have been hunting with for over 25 years and it’s a .300 > win. mag. round.  I shoot Failsafe rounds and have had a muzzle break > installed.  The gun has served me well. > — > John Harvey > http://home.att.net/~john.harvey/vfpstuff.htm >Kevin: >I have one in .300 Weatherby Magnum…got it from Wal-Mart also.  I’ve >been extremely happy with it.  Exceptionally accurate gun.  With factory >Hornady Custom 180 grain Interlocks, I can and do print .75" groups >consistently.  Haven’t tried factory Weatherby ammo, but I would expect >even better accuracy.  I’ve mounted a Leupold Vari-X III 3.5-10×50 on >mine, and it made for an exceptional combo.  The trigger mechanism on >this gun is rugged, simple, and fully adjustable. >A couple of *very minor* downsides: >1) I’m not crazy about the stock.  The fitting, particularly around the >safety and trigger/floorplate assembly, leaves something to be desired. >I thought I’d just go out and buy a nicer stock, but, nobody seems to >produce a high-quality synthetic aftermarket stock for this gun. >2) The trigger/floorplate assembly isn’t blued…it’s painted!  I’ve >scratched mine down to the bare metal while trying to disassemble the >gun.  According to Weatherby, the assembly is of such construction that >it *cannot* be blued — which is to say that it’s cheap "pot" metal.  It >is solid and well machined, however. >3) Loading my gun isn’t as smooth as I’d like it.  This might be due to >the size of the .300 Weatherby case.  I have to position the rounds just >right before pressing them down into the magazine well, or the third >round will jam up under the receiver. Considering buying the Weatherby Vanguard rifle from Walmart. Synthetic model with McMillan stock and built on the Howa action from japan. Walmart still has a bunch of them, even though they quit producing them in 1997. They are not the same quality as the MarkV’s, but they cost 1/2 as much. Has anyone ever shot one that can testify to the accuarcy? Any pros or cons oabout them?          Thx for help..Kevin Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at:         http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/

yds. Never a problem. Weatherby includes a test target with rifle and guarantees groups of 1 1/4" or less. I wouldn’t be afraid to get another one. Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at:         http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/

Kevin: I have one in .300 Weatherby Magnum…got it from Wal-Mart also.  I’ve been extremely happy with it.  Exceptionally accurate gun.  With factory Hornady Custom 180 grain Interlocks, I can and do print .75" groups consistently.  Haven’t tried factory Weatherby ammo, but I would expect even better accuracy.  I’ve mounted a Leupold Vari-X III 3.5-10×50 on mine, and it made for an exceptional combo.  The trigger mechanism on this gun is rugged, simple, and fully adjustable. A couple of *very minor* downsides: 1) I’m not crazy about the stock.  The fitting, particularly around the safety and trigger/floorplate assembly, leaves something to be desired. I thought I’d just go out and buy a nicer stock, but, nobody seems to produce a high-quality synthetic aftermarket stock for this gun. 2) The trigger/floorplate assembly isn’t blued…it’s painted!  I’ve scratched mine down to the bare metal while trying to disassemble the gun.  According to Weatherby, the assembly is of such construction that it *cannot* be blued — which is to say that it’s cheap "pot" metal.  It is solid and well machined, however. 3) Loading my gun isn’t as smooth as I’d like it.  This might be due to the size of the .300 Weatherby case.  I have to position the rounds just right before pressing them down into the magazine well, or the third round will jam up under the receiver. This is the only gripe I’m having a hard time living with, and I’ve considered calling Weatherby about the issue.  I haven’t heard anyone else make this complaint. All in all, I think the gun is an exceptional value, especially given its accuracy. Chris Richard > Considering buying the Weatherby Vanguard rifle from Walmart. Kevin:  The Vanguard is a very nice rifle — Accuracy guarantee is 1 1/2" at 100 yards, same as the Mark V rifles.  They were produced by Weatherby to give people a chance at a nice rifle without the expense of the Mark V action (difficult to machine) and fancy stockwork.  I have 4 of them, and like them. A good choice for a solid hunting rifle.  Currently, Weatherby only markets them through Wal-Mart, on a "day to day" contract, which could be terminated by either party on short notice.  The Vanguards are not available through Weatherby dealers.  Jim. > Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at: >         http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/

I have one in 243. great gun. .345 groups with Hornedy.  Sierra 100 grain just a little better.  Handles anything I give it. If you are looking for a hunting rifle, go for it.  The Howa action is longer than my Browning actions and allows me to load to a  greater COL.  Tough little gun.  I have hunted the Adirondacks in below zero weather, snow, rain and never a problem.  Shoots factory ammo well.  My word on it.
