Thanks (Re: Nosler Partition)
Question:
Everybody, Thanks for all the information and input. I have one more question. Would it make any sense to carry some 220 grain Remington soft points for extra protection? I will already be shooting the 180 Nosler Partitions, but if the 220’s would do a better job on a bear at close quarters, then I will buy a couple of boxes and carry them out hunting. Thanks again. A good hunt !!!!! It’s what makes the trophy Johnny Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at: http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/

While I think the 220’s would be better, I seriously doubt you would have the time to empty the 180’s, find the 220’s in some pocket, load them and chamber a round in the time you would have available in any situation in which you would need them. Just go with the 180’s and learn to shoot your rifle quickly. Larry Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at: http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/

What am I missing? Where, oh where, are the news reports of thousands and thousands of hunters and hikers devoured by bears each year? Where are the long lines of refugees streaming out of bear country seeking safety from the bruins in the inner cities? When did the bears start wearing flak jackets so that only hig volume firepower can overcome their armor? It seems like at least once a week someone comes in with a request for information on bear defense. I am not saying that people smear themselves with bacon grease and wander around unarmed in bear country, but readers of this ng are likely hunters, and yet the questions still keep coming. What generated this level of fear of wildlands and wildlife? Are hunters now so urban oriented that venturing off the pavement has become an exercise in overcoming fear? I am beginning to see the reverse of the AR idiocy here. ARs maintain that wolves and bears are really very cuddly creatures that would never harm a ‘friendly’ human. This is as much a load of crap as the idea that all wolves and bears are slavering in the woods just waiting to pounce on and devour any and all humans who enter there. What happened to the knowledge and common sense that hunters once had? — I do not exist to serve the state. Carry a few 220’s, better yet, carry a couple of boxes. You never know, there might be a flock ‘o them bear. While you’re at it, you may not have time to empty your 180’s and reload with the 220’s, so carry a .454 strapped to your hip. Again, you need to carry a lot of ammo and maybe a couple of speedloaders. Seriously, if your 180’s won’t do the job, you’re in a bad situation that 220’s probably won’t help, in which case the last thing I would do is start unloading my gun.
