Congrats on the first muzzleloader deer with your son!  What special times those are. I am hoping for the same with my sons.  I have 5 kids of which the 2nd and 3rd are boys that are now 15 and 12.  My oldest took his first deer with a rifle last year.  He and I both will be hunting with muzzleloaders for the first time this year – which starts next weekend, Dec. 2 and runs thtough Dec. 31.  We can take either sex during muzzleloading season.  He took a doe last year and wants to hold out for a buck this year. Then, in late season, my 12 year old and I will be going out in Jan for "antlerless" rifle season.  The area we are hunting in has so many deer they will let us take two deer for each permit. We have spent the last two weekends out scouting, putting up stands, sighting rifles, etc.  We’ve spotted lots of deer but no large bucks yet. We’ll not be in a big hurry since we are only about 45 minutes away from being in the stand. Again – congrats to your son! The Lord is good.  What a blessing it is to be able to spend quality times like this with our chhildren.    Just wanted to share with the group my joy at watching my 13 year old son take his first blackpowder deer!    He has two nice bucks under his belt from previous seasons with a slug-gun, but this year he wanted to follow his wonderful, loving, devoted father (that’s me!) in the tradition of blackpowder hunting deer.    I took him to the range and taught him how to safely load and handle a muzzleloader.  A little side-lock 50 cal.  He took to it right off, scoring better than I could on the targets!    Then, opening day of deer season here in Illinois.  We had a wonderful morning.  Saw about 15 deer.  He tried to get a sight on a small buck, but it wouldn’t hold still.  About 45 minutes later, 4 does came by.  I grunted and they stopped, he took careful aim and fired.  The does took off across the field. "Which one did you shoot at?"  I asked. "The first one, but I think I missed."  was his reply.    I continued watching them as they ran.  About 110 yards away, one of the does slowed to a stop, wobbled and fell over! "You got her!  She’s down!"  I told him excitedly. "I did!  Really!" he said, as his eyes widened.    We walked out to the deer and looked her over.  He had made an excellent shot.  I congratulated him. "The good Lord gave you that deer son.  That worked out perfectly."  I told him. "Yea, he did.  ’Cause I was wanting my first muzzleloader deer to be a doe since I haven’t ever killed a doe before.  I really didn’t want to shoot that little buck with the muzzleloader."  he said. "I can’t wait to get to school and tell my friends!" he continued. (Fortunately his closest friends are young hunters also.)    He is a good boy who loves the Lord, loves to hunt and does well in school.  The anti-hunters have no argument good enough to condemn hunting if my son is their example.    Before the season opened, I took him scouting and we spent the trip with me teaching him some of what I know about scouting deer and chosing a place for a stand.  He asked me why I was spending so much effort to show him every little thing.  I answered that there would come a time when he would deer hunt without me and he needed to know how to read sign for himself.  He told me, "but, I always want to hunt with you."    I’m going to continue teaching him everything I can, but as long as my legs will carry me to the woods, I will hunt with my son.  I know this because I love my son too much to not be there.
