scout rifle
Question:
>Im having a custom 7mm08 scout rifle made out of an old german mauser >action that with scope should wiegh 5.0 lbs, give or take an oz or two. >Ill let you know how it turns out.
I think you are going to give more than a oz or two if you are building a scout on a "old german mauser". A small ring action weighs around 2.6 lbs, a very short light barrel about 2.0 ( and remember you have to leave enough on it to mount your scope base, so a bit more than 2 lbs is more realistic ) and very light stock is in the neighborhood of 1.0 lbs. If you add this up you are already up to 5.6 lbs and you have not included the scope nor the mounts and rings which will get you up about another lb. To me, this adds up to nearly 6.5 lbs which is about as light as any scoped mauser carbine can be realistically built. If you use a alloy trigger guard assembly and shorten the action, you might save another 4 oz or so, but you are not going to get even close to 5.0 lbs. regards, Ken Karcich
Response:
I Have used a scout scope and found it to be a good combo for still hunting wooded areas. I feel the power of the scope should not exceed 2X and it must be used with both eyes open. It was good in that it is real fast in comming up and on target even on moving game through a wooded area. Im still not sure if I like the looks of the setup though. The setup is nice in that you can grab the gun right by the top of the receiver when walking. The eye relief was approx 9".
