Scope talk

Question:

I see alot of you talking about Leupold,Simmons,Burris,Bushnell,Tasco but I never see anyone talking about Weaver scopes.I don’t own one but alot of the shooters at the range say they are some of the best scopes out. I hear that too…problem is I don’t have any experience with the new Weavers. FWIW, the Weavers I hear about are their new Grand Slam series. I know they’ve been talked up by the gun writers, which inspires a small amount of confidence for me. If you do read anything about Weavers, be aware that this is a company which has made major changes. It would be simplistic to say "Weavers are good scopes" since there are many models….and some of the older scopes of their’s which I once owned were poor, imo….well below a Burris or Leupold in quality (they were cheaper tho too). I am eager to see the new Grand Slams, but from what I can tell they aren’t much cheaper than a Burris Signature, which I know I’ll be pleased with, so for me anyway, there is very little incentive to take a chance on one of the new Weavers (or any other scope which costs as much). Maybe I’ll get a chance to use someone else’s at the range sometime. joe   "The doorway to all freedoms is framed with muskets"       –from an old NRA ‘junk mail’ solicitation– Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at:         http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/

NRA Life Member I have always liked Weaver after they helped me out on a Weaver scope I had problems with a few years ago. Two weeks before a Antelope hunt I was at the range and somehow nocked one of the adjustment knobs off. I did’nt know if I hit it on something or what, but I sent it back to Weaver with a note saying I had the hunt in two weeks and if they could let me know how much to fix it or if I needed to buy a new scope for my hunt. I next day aired it too them and two days later a received a brand new scope from them at no charge to me. After that I have always stuck with Weaver. I do’nt know if the other scope companies would go out of their way like that or not, I have never sent back or owned another brand of scope , but I will give my business to Weaver. The new Weaver "grand slam" is a relative unknown; it’s very new.  Their older scopes were perhaps better than the mass marketed trash low end Tasco, Simmons, and Bushnell, but they were not on par with Leupold or Burris (or even Redfield, IMHO).  Their current 36X BR scope has as strong a following as a Leupold’s "D" 36X.  In other words, it’s as good as they get. I have looked at their 4-16X; one I nearly bought except the reticle was a super fine crosshair and a very fine dot … I couldn’t find the crosshairs easily even on a bright day unless I was looking at a paper target. One of my favorite scopes is their K2.5; it’s a great scope for a brush gun. I think a lot of us hesitate to lay out major bucks; they aren’t that far behind the Leupold Vari X II in cost and Leupold’s 3-9X is a known quality reliable performer. Now you went and spoiled our little secrete.  I have two Weaver Grand Slam scopes and like them better than my old Leupold Vari-x 3’s. Sharper, as bright, a touch heavier, better adjustments.  Don’t get me wrong folks, I used to believe in Leupold to, still I started to have trouble with them.  Sure they fixed them everytime and they were just down the road, but!  The last three scopes of there’s that I have had have had drift problems that couldn’t be cured.  They claimed it was within acceptable tolerance.  One inch high one day.  Five inches low and two right the next, off the paper the next time. If you own a bore sight device you can test Leupold’s adjustments anytime.  Set the rifle in an acceptable vise install your bore sighter and adjust the windage and elevation while looking through the scope.  Often they will not move as advertised till you tap the scope and then they go "twang" to a new location.  Did it move in exactly the direction you intended?  Did it "twang" a second time?  Once you get it adjusted, note the cross hair locations and go shoot, do not adjust the scope.  When you come back were the cross hairs in the same place?  My new ones never did. I do have a friend with my old compact 3×9 that hasn’t needed adjustment since I sighted it in 8 years ago when it used to be my rifle.  So if you have an old quality one good for you. My local gun smith has sold 1200 Weaver scopes over the last few years and has only had to return 3.  In the same period he sold around 100 Leupold’s of which 25 needed to be returned.  Including one LPS from a 340 Wtby that dislodged the objective lens and spun 90 degrees sideways. Also Outodoor life rated the Grand Slam scopes as #1 in their gear test for 2000. Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at:         http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/

Hunter, Weaver has been acquired by Blount, a large company that sells Simmons scopes and other sporting goods. I just ordered a 1.5-5x Grand Slam and will have it by the weekend. I’ll let you know about what I think. Bill Kenner Nashville, TN Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at:         http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/

I did get my Weaver Grand Slam in 1.5-5X. From an ergonimic point the scope is top of the pile, but it’s not as bright as the MeOpta Artemis 2000 1.5-6X 42mm. The reticle is thinner than I like. I can let you know later about how tough it is. Bill Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at:         http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/
