scope set-up

Question:

> Hello, a few months ago I bought a new scope 3-9 pwr for my 7mm Reg Mag. > I want to use my rifle for bears, moose and deer. I know people > recommend using a 165-175 grain cartridge for moose (large game) but > would it be be ok to use 150 grain with shots at 300 hundred yards or > more?

You should consult some ballistics tables for the ammo you use (or the powder you use if you reload) and see which bullet retains the most energy at 300 yards.  You can probably find these tables online. > I was thinking of sighting my new scope in at 150 yards, is this a good > distance?

Sight your scope in at the distance you expect to be doing most of your shooting, then consult the aforesaid tables to see how high/low you need to aim for shots that are further/closer than that.  Memorise these adjustment values for, say, each 50 meters. > and what power should I set my scope on while sighting my > rifle in at that distance?

For sighting in use the scope’s maximum magnification.  For hunting, use the lowest magnification that gives you a clear view of the animal’s kill-zone. Shoot straight… Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at:         http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/

I know people recommend using a 165-175 grain cartridge for moose (large game) but would it be be ok to use 150 grain with shots at 300 hundred yards or more? I was thinking of sighting my new scope in at 150 yards, is this a good distance? and what power should I set my scope on while sighting my rifle in at that distance? A good rule of thumb for a rifle with a mv of 2800-3000+ fps is to sight in to hit 2 inches above the cross hair at 100 yds. That should put you on at 200-225 yds and 7 inches low at 300. I use a target with an aiming point and a 1" circle two inches above it. Sight in with the highest power you have so you can see better.      Bill Van Houten (USA Ret)  "No matter how hard you try, you can’t throw a potato chip very far." Danny, You want a heavier bullet for larger game.  It transfers additional energy especially at greater distance. Go to one of the cartridge manufactures  (like Federal) and look at the data for their various selections (Nosler Partition).  These charts give bullet drop at various distances and can be extremely helpful in determinine the zero you would want.

Deer would be no problem with the 150, but for moose and bear I would recommend a heavier bullet with a good reputation (like Nosler Partition). You want a heavier bullet for larger game.  It transfers additional energy especially at greater distance. Go to one of the cartridge manufactures  (like Federal www.federalcartridge.com) and look at the data for their various selections. These charts give bullet drop at various distances and can be extremely helpful in determinine the zero you would want. You may need to write down the drop at the longer ranges and tape it to your rifle stock so you can find it when you need it.  A laser range finder is strongly suggested on the longer shots.  And of course don’t shoot beyond your ability. > I was thinking of sighting my new scope in at 150 yards, is this a good > distance?

Most 7mm Mag shooters would zero at a greater distance.  200 yards probably more like 250. >and what power should I set my scope on while sighting my > rifle in at that distance?

You want to sight in at highest power at that means you are aiming at the exact same spot each time.  Double check you scope at its lowest power to ensure the point of impact does not change when the scope magnification. > Thanks for any info you may have… > Danny > Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at: >         http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/
