scope rings.

Question:

I just bought a new Leupold 4.5-14 x 50 to put on my remington 7400. Now I have to it mounted on the gun. I would like to still be able to use the irons on the gun for shots less than 50 yards.  I am looking for input on choosing the best scope rings for this setup. The "classic" approach to your situation is to install see through mounts. This will put your very large and heavy scope very high over your rifle, making the rifle unwieldy and scope difficult to use as you will not be able to achieve a consistent cheek/stock "weld." Another approach would be to mount it in Leupold QD rings as low as it can go (which will not be all that low with a 50mm objective) and then practice shooting at close range with the scope set at 4.5x.  I’ve made hits on moving targets at 50 yards with a 4x glass and I once got an extra hit in on a running – already wounded – Whitetail at about 25 yards with the same 4x scope.  If the weather is foul or you are planning to dive into a thicket you can detach your scope, leave it in the truck, and rely on the irons for close shots.  Good hunting.
