SAVAGE 99

I respectfully disagree. The 308 and the 300 savage are almost twins (with the 308 having a slight edge). They are so close ballistically that no animal shot with either will know the difference. Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at:         http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/

The 99 is a fine gun. I used to have one in .308 and my youngest son got his 1st deer with it. It was very accurate and reliable. The 300 Sav is a very good deer round. It won’t reach out too far but is very adequate out to maybe 200 yds. For moose, the 300 Savage will do it, but keep your shots under 100 yds or so. It’s got more oomph than the 30-30 (which has taken lots of moose), but it’s definitely a short range item. If you could stumble across a 99 in .308 you would have a much better moose gun. My Grandfather has dropped a moose with a .300 Savage, out of a Savage 99. The only details I know are that my father got really sick of moose for the next 2 years. It can be done, but I’d defer to the people here with more detailed and on hand info. — Those who beat their swords into plowshares Shall live under the yoke of those who kept their swords.   The Savage 99 is one of the strongest, best designed, and most accurate lever actions made. Also, safer than most others. Took my best deer ever with a 250-3000. If you like levers, you’ll love the Savage. Bob Gravity…It’s Not Just a Good Idea. It’s the Law Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at:         http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/

The Savage 99 was one of the finest lever action rifles made.  I’d wager that the only lever action that has outsold it is the venerable Model 94 Winchester.  One of the major advantages of the Model 99 over most lever actions is its the rotary magazine it featured for most of the time it was in production.  The rotary mag allowed for the use of spitzer bullets in the Model 99 (so too did the box magazine that replaced it), which gave it a big advantage over other most lever actions.  If the rifle is in good condition and the price is right, by all means, go for it.  This rifle really is a classic. As to whether or not the 300 Savage is suitable for both deer and moose,my own opinion would be yes for deer and no for moose. Ballistically the 300 Savage falls somewhere between the 30-30 and the 30-06, and a little closer towards the 30-06 side of the scale.  If I were going after moose (which I make no claim to ever having done), I’d want something bigger to make sure that Bullwinkle doesn’t wander off into 3 feet of water after I hit him and pick that place to kick the bucket.  I can’t imagine those would be the most pleasant conditions under which to field dress an animal that big.  If someone with actual moose hunting experience wants to contradict me, I’d recommend listening to them and not me, though. So far as deer are concerned, unless the ones you’re hunting are armor plated, the 300 Savage should do just fine, just as it has for decades. I’ve seen it used in this capacity and would have no problems recommending for that purpose. –steve Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at:         http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/
