SAKO 375 H&H question

Question:

Can anybody give me a ballpark price on the Sako Safari rifle in 375 H&H Magnum? Is this Sako Safari rifle (or Sako in general) as good as a Winchester 375 H&H Magnum? Thanks! Suggested retail from 1998 Guns & Ammo annual: $2,765 Sako makes very fine rifles with exceptionally smooth actions and very accurate barrels. Sako actions do not have controlled round feeding like the Mauser 98 and Winchester 70; but, they do have a fixed ejector and a large non-rotating extractor. I’d say that the quality on a production Sako Safari will exceed that of a production Winchester. A Winchester Super Express .375 H&H retails for $865! If a guy shops he can get one a lot cheaper than that. The Winchester Classic Custom Express retails for $2512. For that price you get real fancy wood and a custom barrel and tuned action. Plus as you mention you have controlled round feeding which might come in handy in a .375. It isn’t a production rifle for sure. But it is still cheaper than that Sako Safari Grade. Really when comparing the two makes, The Sako Safari Grade should be compared to the Winchester Classic Custom Express, not the Winchester production rifle. Agreed — the fit, finish and out-of-the box performance of the Sako is extremely high, on par with custom guns. And, you can argue for hours about how to pronounce “say-koh” or “sahh-ko”, just thing of the round-the-campfire rhubarbs???
