Ruger Laminate stock bedding methods
Question:
I’m looking for techniques to bed my Ruger MkII target/varmint rifle. Apparently epoxy bedding is out due to the inherent difficultly experienced when trying to match up the 45 degree recoil lug screw. I would like to hear about pillar bedding experiences. Thanks! The heck it is!! :-) I did it. I didn’t notice any inherent difficulties. Some Remington-bigotted gunsmith is yanking your chain. I’ve done one Ruger V/T and 2 77 Mk IIs. I’m on the other side of the fence … how the heck are you going to pillar bed a rifle when the actions screws are not parallel? :-) It can be done I’m sure, but it is harder and more expensive than just glass bedding the action. As to effectiveness … how about a 77 Mk II R in .25-’06 in a Ramline stock that will shoot in the .3s at 100 yards, a 77 Mk II VT in .25-’06 that will shoot a half inch at 200 yards with Nosler partitions, or a 77 R (stainless) .338 that will shoot in the .3s at 100 yards with Barnes X bullets? You have nothing to lose by trying other than $10-$15 for a Brownells Acraglass (prefer the Gel variety) kit. Just follow the directions carefully and keep an eye on where the extra goo that is squishing out is going. Aaron, I bedded my M77 VT 308 Win with Brownell’s Agraglas Gel. Bedded fine but did not do anything to improve the accuarcy. William, On the Ruger and Winchester they use three action mounting screws. If you get a spacer with an ID just large enough for the center screw to fit in and place it over the screw and between the action and the trigger guard this will pillar bed it. You want to measure the distance between the action and the guard and grind off the spacer to the right length. What sometimes happens if you haven’t done this is that the center action changes tension on the center of the action causing either a change in or poor accuracy. If you are still having troubles then you may wish to check out the AccuMajic Accurizer.
