RIFLE/DEER Nosler 6mm Ballistic Tips and red deer hinds?
Question:
I’m going to be stalking red deer in Scotland shortly. The hinds (females) weigh in at 100lbs once the head, feet, and all internal organs are removed. I’m taking a 243 as my second rifle. I’m planning on broadside heart/lung shots only with this rifle. I’ve shot pronghorn antelope with this bullet, and they proved effective. But the red deer’s coat is thicker, I think. Therefore, I would like to hear from anyone who has _first hand_ experiences using Nosler’s 6mm 95 grain Ballistic Tip bullet on any species deer of this size. –Jonathan Jonathan Spencer — forensic firearms examiner Keith Borer Consultants Mountjoy Research Centre, Durham, England, DH1 3UR tel: +44 191 386 6107 fax: +44 191 383 0686 Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at: http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/ To leave the Hunting listserv list, send a message with SIGNOFF HUNTING
Response:
I’ve no experience with this bullet on deer. However, if you place your shots very carefully, you should be okay. If you’re off a bit and hit the shoulder (flesh or bone), you’re likely to loose a good deal of meat. I remember a few years back having a friend of mine hit a mule deer in the ham with Remington’s Core-Lokt softpoint bullets from a .30-06 at about 150 yards. That lightly constructed bullet disintegrated and produced a 12" zone of extravasation even though it did not hit bone and ruined a lot of meat. I now use the 90gr. Speer Hot Core in the .243. it has a heat-bonded core and a heavier jacket than the Nosler. With the Speer Maximum load of H-4831 I get nearly 3000 fps. from a 20" barrel. It’ll still do a lot of damage to flesh due to expansion, but less than the Nosler.
