I am not positive, but wouldn’t the bolt handle be locked into place if the safety is applied while moving through brush? Is the Howa different from most other bolt actions in this respect? I would like to hear from anyone who knows the answer to this. Michael A. Jones Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at: http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/

OK boys and girls I’m looking for some advice on rifles. I currently own a bolt-action Howa 300 Win mag with a synthetic stock and blued barrel. It is a very nice handling and shooting gun. The thing I don’t like about it is that the bolt does not *lock*, apparently this is a *feature* of these rifles. So what happens is you’re walking along with the rifle sling on your shoulder and you bump a branch which knocks the bolt open. I think you can see where this becomes a problem. I am considering trading in the Howa and another 284 Win rifle I have to get one new rifle. Does anyone have suggestions on make/model? I’m thinking about a stainless steel version, what are the pros and cons of stainless? I would like to stay with the 300 Win mag caliber because I plan to use the gun mostly for caribou, elk, bear, and moose. Please email me your responses.
