Request Opinions: Looking for accurate autoloading .22 rifle (at 100 yards)

Question:

I have a very old Remington 552 Speedmaster .22 rifle that shoots very well at 100 yards.  Even with the open sights, the 21 inch barrel can consistantly bust clay pigeons set up at 100 yards.  I really like the rifle, but it is getting aged and it isn’t suited well for a scope. I’ve been looking at a Remington 597 with a laminated stock and a heavy barrel.  The gun looks and feels great.  I also like the look of the stainless Marlin Model 60 with synthetic stock. I’m looking for options from everyone on the accuracy of the Remington 597 and Marlin 60.  I’m not really concerned with what it will do at 25 yards because any legitimate .22 should drive tacks at that distance.  I’m more concerned with how it will perform at a distance (100 yards). If the Remington 597 with its 20 inch barrel is any where near as good as the Remington 552 is with its 21 inch barrel, then it should be a nice rifle. For my choice a ruger 10/22 target barreled rifle is great, my accuracy at 100 yards with Winchester T-22 ammunition is averaging 0.55".  This is what I call target accuracy.  I have a bolt action ANSCHUTZ rifle which I can hit a "ASPRIN" tablet at 100 yards one out of three times. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – > I have a very old Remington 552 Speedmaster .22 rifle that shoots very > well at 100 yards.  Even with the open sights, the 21 inch barrel can > consistantly bust clay pigeons set up at 100 yards.  I really like the > rifle, but it is getting aged and it isn’t suited well for a scope. > I’ve been looking at a Remington 597 with a laminated stock and a > heavy barrel.  The gun looks and feels great.  I also like the look of > the stainless Marlin Model 60 with synthetic stock. > I’m looking for options from everyone on the accuracy of the Remington > 597 and Marlin 60.  I’m not really concerned with what it will do at > 25 yards because any legitimate .22 should drive tacks at that > distance.  I’m more concerned with how it will perform at a distance > (100 yards). > If the Remington 597 with its 20 inch barrel is any where near as good > as the Remington 552 is with its 21 inch barrel, then it should be a > nice rifle. > DuckHunt > Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at: >         http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/

I also recommend the Ruger 10/22 Heavy Barrel. Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at:         http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/

In a bolt, which should provide you the maximum accuracy, do not overlook the Remington 541-T.   They will put to shame any hopped-up 10-22 I have ever seen.  If price is a big factor, check out Marlin’s bolt action .22’s.
