Not many seem to remember but there was a factory recall on those Model 600 triggers in about 1978 or 79. The fix was done by any Remington approved gunsmith. Seems some would fire when the safety was applied and then disengaged. Some trigger/safety parts were replaced at Remington’s expense. An inquiry to Remington should reveal if the Mohawk rifle you have has had the "treatment". This would be especially important for a "first gun" for a kid. The triggers are fullu adjustible. That big court suit they lost was due to someone carrying a loaded rifle in a vehicle and managing to shoot some one when they pulled the rifle toward themselves. Of course the person that does "trigger jobs" without some level of expertise should have their sanity questioned. Spend the money and have a "pro" do the trigger. I have done a bunch of my own and they are nice servicable 2 1/2 pound level. My 700 Varmint has a Jewel trigger set at 1/2 ounce so I do undestand light. Whoa! be carfeul on this one. What is the age of your mohawk? does it have a gold trigger? It probably doesn’t being that it is a Mohawk and not the 600 or 660. Remington had and still does have a recall on the trigger group on these rifles. Call a Remington Dealer and have them check the ser number to see if yours needs to be changed out. The problem was that the rifle was dischaging, I believe there was a problem with the sear engagment. By the way Remington really frowns on people adjusting the trigger on any of their guns, which is too bad being that it really is quite a nice trigger with sear, weight and over travel adjustment.
