Remingon 700 or Winchester 70?
Question:
I do think you will will be very pleased with either a Remington or a Winchester. I own a Remington M700 & a M7600. Both have been rock solid and both are very accurate. My hunting partner has a Winchester M70 featherweight and his rifle is accurate and has been rock solid. If i was in the market for a new bolt action rifle I think I would seriously consider a new Savage. The company has been under new managemnet for the couple of years and they are putting out some real quality firearms again. The CEO of Savage is an avid shooter and hunter, I think his name is Ron Coburn. He has been in the Shooting Times magazine on hunting writups several times. I like the idea of a shootist running a firearms company. That is the way it should be. I want a Savage Model 10FM (ultralight) in 7MM-08. The day they start making them in left hand I will have one. It would be especially sweet in stainless. Check them out at www.savagearms.com Bill Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at: http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/

Hi Scott, My experience with the 7-30 Waters tells me that you do not need to go for a rifle in .308. The one I used would push a 139 grain Hornady about 2500 fps, and would group less than 4 inches at 200 yards. I guess the main thing would be what you are using for sights. If scoped, I would be comfortable with a 200 yard shot, with iron sights, I would then get the new rifle. Oh heck, you need a new rifle anyway, (grin). — Sam in Gainesville Fl. savage is one of the most accurate rifles out of the box. it has a floating barrel wich is normally seen on very expensive rifles. ive had my savage for over 10 years it is the most accurate gun ive ever shot . ill never by another deer rifle again unless its a savage. mines chambered in 30-06 . its put down many of bucks and never gave me a lick of trouble. but if u want just rem or a win i would go with the remington . good hunting this year. Both are good rifles. The Remington has the edge in accuracy usually, but the Winchester has controlled round feeding. Whichever you choose, don’t skimp on the scope. Get a Burris or Leupold variable with a low power of 2-3X. Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at: http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/

Scott, it is really a coin toss. These are both great guns. I would probably lean more for the Rem 700 because I own more of them and it just feels good in my hands. I have shot both and they are both VERY accurate. I would say that either will be good choice. Sorry I could not help you. Just wanted to drop a note to say thanks for all the input. I know my dad loves his Rem. 700 7mm-08, but I’ve never owned either of these brands. I think I’m leaning toward the Winchester, but I want to check out the Savage also, haven’t heard much about them. Thanks again, and good hunting. I have a winchester mod 70 pre 64 featherweight in 3006. I love the gun. You can’t go wrong with an remingtobn either, but the winchester is a much prettier rifle than any remington I’ve seen. My rifle gives excellent hunting accuracy with factory loads (1.5moa at 100 yds, 4" at 200), and I feel condfident with it. Well, Scott, since you are familiar with levers, my humble suggestion is to look at the Browning BLR in .308. > Hello, > I’m going to be looking for a new rifle this year for whitetail > hunting. Scott: My name is Jerry I have a couple of model 70s. And have found them to very reliable and most importantly accurate. I highly rccommend the 270 caliber this has a powerful punch yet plenty of distance a 160 or 180 grain is plenty heavey to punch through brush. Or you can drop down to 130 for 300 plus yards. Any way I have a 270 and 300win mag. both model 70s and I would not trade either!!!! Share what you know. Learn what you don’t. Both are excellent choices, I have a model 70 .308 and just bought a 70 in 7MM mag. Remington lovers like Remingtons, Winchester lovers like Winchesters. Theres not a dimes worth of difference between the two. I think the Winchesters are priced a little cheaper, at least in my area. Good luck! I would go with a Savage 110 series in 30.06. From everything I’ve read, Savages are more accurate out of the box than any other brand. I’m not the type to get rifles worked on by gunsmiths and the most I would do is put in a drop in trigger. I have a Remington 788 (which was a budget version of the 700) and it seems OK. The best I’ve been able to do with it was 2 3/4" at 100yds. It’s probably me though. I say go with the 30.06 because it’s more versatile than ..308. You can duplicate any load for .308 with 30.06 and you can get loads for 30.06 that could never be had with the .308. The only advantage of .308 is that you can get a short action rifle, which might be balanced a little better. The Savage rifles cost a lot less, so you could spend the extra $ on a better scope and more ammo. Since I reload, I wouldn’t consider a .308 (the versatility thing again) If you’re really stuck on Winchester vs. Remington, I couldn’t give you any advice on Winchesters. The Remingtons are supposed to be the strongest actions on account of their tubular receivers, and they seem to be the most popular in benchrest shooting. -Jeremy Z Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at: http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/
