Rem 700 or Win 70?
Question:
I’m buying a synthetic 30.06; either a Winchester 70 Black Shadow or a Remington 700 ADL. Both have a good feel for me. I intend to use it with my Leupold Vari-X ii. Does anyone have any comments about accuracy, durability, or action? thanks Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at: http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/

I would go with the Rem 700. If you ever want to upgrade your rifle, there is a huge aftermarket supply of replacement components to choose from. Unless there is some cosmetic difference that causes you to prefer the Winchester, I’d buy Remington. This is kind of like Dodge vs Chevy. It’s a matter of personal preference for the most part. But, the base action for a majority of custom bolt action rifles (mine included) is the Remington 700. — Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at: http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/

Hi my long time #1 hunting rifle is a Rem 700ADL, 30/06, Leupold 2X7. It is bedded in a Brown Precision glass stock that I did over 25 years ago. The gun still shoots 1" moa and that is after taking some nasty falls in snow in the Rockies. I even knocked off the front and rear sights in one or another fall. Finally replaced them. The gun was parkerized over 15 years ago and the stock is a flat olive drab. The scope gets spray painted with a flat black when it needs it. The sling is home made to fit me and my needs. Uncle Mike quick release swivels that are taped to quiet them. If that gun has any drawbacks, it is the noise the stock makes if it taps any metal. Will spook game in a heartbeat because it sure as hell ain’t natural!! As far as I am concerned, Rem still makes the best out of the box gun on the current market. Many years ago I had some Winchester Mdl 70’s that make me cry when I recall selling them in a divorce. Back then I was in love with the old classic mainly because it had a clip slot I could use for hi-power competition and rapid fire. Price is way out of reach for them these days. The new ones are suspect to me.
