Question: Loads for model 70 in .270?
Question:
Eric, I have a Model 70 in .243 Winchester and had the same problem, only in = reverse. My rifle would not group the lighter (less than 95 grain) = bullets at all. I tried most of the major brands, styles and weights. = Nothing would give adequate performance for woodchucks beyond 200 yards. = Finally, after reading everything I could find about the .243 I found an = article where the author had a similar experience. What he stumbled upon = was that his rifle preferred a certain POWDER. Once he found the right = powder his rifle shot well. I reviewed my loading records and found that = I had not tried IMR-3031 for the light bullets. Bingo! My featherweight = now groups it’s first 3 shot under an inch with 70, 70 and 80 grain = bullets. Pick a good bullet, preferably a Nosler ballistic tip or Sierra = then try as many different powders as you can find. Start with moderate = loads, find the most accurate powder then fine tune. Good luck Mike Sent: Sunday, March 10, 1996 7:43 PM I’m looking for some help with 130-140 gr deer loads for the Winchester model 70 featherweight. I’d like exceptional bench performance (tho’ unnecc for the < 100 yd NH average shot). I’ve had great luck w/ 110 varmint loads, but hit a wall on the heavier stuff.. So has anybody got = a good starting point for good paper-punching loads in the higher = velocities for my gun? I’ve got 130 gr fb. in Speer & Nosler on hand and 140 gr in Hornaday. thanks in advance.. Eric Ryder
