premium vs cheaper ammo question
Question:
Is there a substantial difference in performance on deer, between your basic Remington Express/Federal Classic/PMC loads, and more expensive premium lines of factory ammo? I’m shooting a newly-accquired .270 Savage. I’m happy with its accuracy with PMC 150gr psp and Remington 130gr psp Corelokt, I’m interested in finding out about bullet performance on deer. I figure this rifle probably has plenty of power, regardless of load. Insights from those who’ve used diff factory loads will be appreciated jb Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at: http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/

Good question, no good answer. Room for another whole news group. If you are happy with the regualr stuff, keep using it. If not, try the premiums. The premium ammo MIGHT be more accurate in your gun and MIGHT give better terminal performance, but if you are hunting white tails in close, there will probable be no gain in going to the more expensive stuff. The best question would be exactly what and where and at what distances do you expect to hunt. If you read the gun mags, each month they devote about 427 &1/2 pages to this topic. The differences are real, but they will only become apparent in the specialized situations that will require the superior qualities of the priemium ammo. A .270 is more than adequate for deer, so it is unlikely you would ever notice the superior performance of Nosler Partitions or perhaps Barnes X bullets over the "ordinary" bullets you are now using. Should you decide to use the .270 on a moose perhaps, you would do well to investigate the potential advantages of premium ammunition. I’ve tried a few different versions. I like the performance I’m getting from Federal’s premium varmint loads in .243. The load uses Speer’s TNT 70gr HP loaded to 3400 fps. It’s been the most accurate load in my Remington 700VLS and the terminal performance is fantastic. One of the gentlemen I work with uses the same bullet (different caliber) at the same speed in hand loads for deer. He swears that neck shots drop them in place. These are Texas deer, not some of the larger variety I’ve heard of. > Is there a substantial difference in performance on deer, between your basic > Remington Express/Federal Classic/PMC loads, and more expensive premium > lines of factory ammo? I have an opinion on this. I always use the best load obtainable for hunting. My reasons: I spend hundreds of dollars and considerable time to go hunting. Since I only hunt birds (currently), I shoot more than big game hunters do. But I still might hunt all day and never shoot. Or I might have only one shot. I want that one shot to be the best it can be. If I look at the overall cost of hunting, the additional cost of premium shotshells is completely insignificant. Amo for target practice is different. But I almost never do target practice. >Is there a substantial difference in performance on deer, between your basic >Remington Express/Federal Classic/PMC loads, and more expensive premium >lines of factory ammo?
